Austin at his home in Blue Hill of heart failure, at a little after two o'clock, Sunday afternoon last came as a great shock to the numerous friends of Mr Austin and his family, in Lawrence. No previous word of his sickness had been reported here, in fact, we are told he had but very little warning that a fatal condition was at hand. He had suffered a severe spell from his heart on Thursday and also on Saturday, before the final attack that resulted in his death. Mr & Mrs Austin and their family of two sons, and two daughters moved to Lawrence in the early part of the year 1896, and for sixteen years thereafter they were identified with church and school interests of this place drawing many warm friends to them by their untiring devotion and persistent endeavor in the up building and uplift of the community. The deceased was highly respected by many old friends here who mourn his departure. He had served this community as photographer, school teacher, real estate and insurance agent and had qualified and practiced law here before moving to Blue Hill a dozen years ago. He owned considerable property in Lawrence at the time of his demise and frequently he came here on business matters. Mr Austin was manifestly fair and honorable in all his dealings with men and posed a genital spirit that craved friendship and of late years our visits with him were most pleasant and enjoyable as we would refer back to some incident in the earlier days of Lawrence, that both of us knew so well. His age is given at 65. At the time the end came Mrs Austin was at Utica on a sick call. A brother of deceased, Joseph Austin, is reported to have preceded him in death but ten days. Beside the wife, there survive, two sons, Ralph at Concordia, Kas. And Spencer in Chicago; two daughters, Mrs Cora Stout St. Paul, Neb and Mrs C.C. Smalley, Blue Hill. The funeral services were conducted at Blue Hill Wednesday forenoon at ten o'clock, where burial was made. ~ Lawrence Locomotive 23 Jan 1925 Front Page Obituary Charles Thomas Austin was born near Shirland, Illinois, May 27, 1858 and died at Blue Hill, Nebraska, January 18, 1925, aged 66 years, 8 months and 21 days. He spent his boyhood days on a farm near Shirland, with his parents and three brothers. He secured his education in grade work graduating from the High School at Beiolt, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Congregational church in the town of his childhood. Coming to York County, Nebraska in his twenties, he followed the profession of a teacher for a time and later became a merchant at Utica, Nebraska. He was married to Gertrude Purinton, November 2, 1886 and four children were born to them—two son, Ralph I. Austin of Concordia, Kansas and Spencer E. Austin of Chicago, Illinois—two daughters Mrs Cora E. Stout of Ashland, Nebraska and Mrs Hazel B. Smalley of Blue Hill, all of whom were able to be present at this time. His wife, two son, two daughters and four grandchildren survive him. His brother Joseph having preceded him in death by only a week.
