Description	:	Charles Takeo Ozaki, M.D., Ph.D., a long-serving Lake City pediatrician and the University of Florida College of Medicine’s oldest alumnus has died. He was 94. Ozaki died on Wednesday, February 3, in Gainesville, Florida where he had resided for the previous two years. Ozaki died on Wednesday, February 3, in Gainesville, Florida where he had resided for the previous two years. Born in Eau Gallie, Florida, Ozaki was the son of first generation Japanese immigrant farmers. In World War II he served in the U.S. Army’s distinguished 442nd Regiment. The regiment is best known for its history as a fighting unit composed of American born, second generation soldiers of Japanese ancestry. After World War II Ozaki attended the University of Florida under the GI Bill earning a master’s degree in Soil Science and then a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Ozaki went on to study medicine as a member of UF College of Medicine’s inaugural class which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020. After completing a pediatric residency, in 1963 Ozaki became the first medical specialist to establish a practice in Colombia County. For over 40 years he served the children of Lake City and surrounding rural communities. Ozaki is preceded in death by his wife Nettie Black Ozaki of Lake City. Surviving are his children Keith and Kim Ozaki of Boston, MA, Lassie and Kenneth Patterson of Gainesville, Sherrill and Richard Mullens of Jacksonville, and his brother retired Colonel John Ozaki of El Paso, TX. Formal memorial services will not be held, however the family asks friends and former patients to take a moment to remember Dr. Ozaki in their own way.
