Born May 4, 1946, on the Weber property, south of Oakland, he was a son of the late Joseph "Ted" and Lena Herman O'Haver. His friends knew him as "Charlie." Born May 4, 1946, on the Weber property, south of Oakland, he was a son of the late Joseph "Ted" and Lena Herman O'Haver. His friends knew him as "Charlie." Charlie grew up and spent his early years on the H. Weber & Sons property, where he was born. He attended Oakland Elementary School, the old Oakland High School Annex, and Dennett Road School, where he enjoyed taking part in programs and festivals. One of his favorites was the 1957 Spring Music Festival, which featured Charlie's solo "Trees" by J. Kilmer, and his part in a version of "The Banana Boat Song." He was a 1964 graduate of Southern High School, where he performed in many choral programs, best remembered for his outstanding performance of the lead character in "The Music Man." He was a recipient of an Outstanding Students Achievement Award by the Oakland/Mtn. Lake Park Lions Club for his service and musical contributions within Southern High School and the community it serves that are too numerous to list. He appeared before various professional and civic organizations as a vocal soloist and was a member of local dance bands. His senior chorus teacher, the late Mrs. Carolyn Lambert-Wilt, once stated, "Charles is one of the most talented students I have ever had the opportunity to teach." Charlie worked weekends and after school at Flowers by Webers, doing whatever the job required, which earnings paid for piano lessons. In the fall of 1964 he went to work at WMSG Radio in Oakland as a part-time disc jockey, and later became the local news director. In January 1968, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he worked in publishing and advertising. As art director for Caribbean Guide Travel Magazine, he traveled to several of the islands throughout the tropics. He also entertained as an organist in many well-known clubs in the Ft. Lauderdale area. He moved to Ft. Myers, Fla., in 1979 and continued working in newspaper and magazine publication. In Ft. Myers, he also worked in summer theatre, appearing in several stage productions. In the late 1980s he returned north, and settled in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where he operated a variety store. In 1989, he relocated to Westernport and worked in retail and restaurant work until 1996, when diabetes and heart problems forced him to slow down. Charlie was very interested in genealogy and had recorded extensive family history on both sides of his family. He worked hard to help organize the O'Haver Family Reunion in 1999, which has successfully continued and has grown each year. He had also compiled The O'Haver Family & Friends Cookbook, Vols. 1, 2, and 3, and had begun gathering information for a future Vol. 4. Charlie will be especially remembered in the local area for his outstanding portrayal of Captain John Hanson McNeill in the 1991 outdoor drama "McNeill's Rangers" at Larenim Park Amphitheatre in Burlington, W.Va. Charlie was a great-grandson of a member of McNeill's Rangers, and after his performance, he was honored to be introduced to and congratulated by a grandson of Captain McNeill. His hobbies included going to flea markets, flowers, his vegetable garden, and his large record collection. He loved to cook and enjoyed making gifts and treats for his many friends and relatives. His pets were a very important part of Charlie's family, and over the years there were many dogs, cats, cockatiels, and parakeets, and in recent months, as his health failed, he had expressed concern that his cat Bo would have a good home. He loved traveling around with other family members to cemeteries, searching for genealogical information, clearing overgrown areas, and placing a flower on a long neglected grave of one of his ancestors. He took pride in his ancestry, and always encouraged the interests of others in their family histories. He looked forward to the several family reunions each summer, arriving with a large picnic basket, camera, notebook full of photos and information, and the hope of meeting yet another descendant in his family tree. Charlie's friendly personality and entertainment will be sadly missed at all these occasions. Charlie is survived by two sisters, Carrie Martin, Monongah, W.Va., and Diana Warnick and husband Delmos, Oakland; one brother, Dennis Butler and wife Dorothy, Pataskala, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; four great-nephews; four great-nieces; one great-great-niece; and his cat, Bo. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jim Martin, in 2006; his best friend, Roy Michael, in 2005; one niece; and one great-niece. Charlie had chosen cremation as his final disposition. A graveside service will be held for Charlie on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Oakland, Md. Friends and relatives are invited to a fellowship dinner following the service.
