Tom also leaves his mother Norma Lay (Jack Thompson), Grimshaw, brothers: Dick (Debbie) Lay, Manning, Alta., Ken (Sheri) Lay, Calgary, Alta. and sister: Mary Anne (Dave) Matheson, Manning, AB as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends, including those special "little kids" that he included in his family from the Peace Motocross Circuit. Tom was born in the old Manning hospital and grew up on the farm in Deadwood until 1960 when the family moved to Manning. Tom was involved in a variety of activities during his younger years, these included working after school at the local Ford dealership, playing in a band called "Ventures" at local dances and was a member of the Air Cadets from 1961 - 1962. After graduation he worked overseas on rigs in Israel. He continued working until he became Tool Push. From 1973-1975 he co-owned D & T Cycle and participated in motocross and snowmobile races in the Alberta circuit, both as racer and pit crew. He often had to drive all night to arrive on time. In 1976 Tom attended NAIT and later Fairview College. Because Tom was a hard worker he was able to purchase a gravel crusher, rebuilt it, and went to work in Grande Prairie crushing gravel. Having other interests he sold his crusher and pursued a welding career in which he owned and operated his own portable welding truck. Tom had an impeccable character. He was from the "old" school of learning where he believed a man's word was worth more than any written contract. He conducted himself in this manner in all areas of his life. He was a hard worker and struck to the goals he set for himself. Tom was a loyal and caring man who loved animals, his home, work and above all else he cherished his family and friends. Funeral service will be held at People's Full Gospel Assembly, 11302-95 Avenue, Grande Prairie on Monday, August 28, 2000 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bob Cowie officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
