The funeral Mass will be Monday at Prince of Peace Church, with burial at St. Irenaeus Cemetery. Charlie was born March 29, 1919, in Sumner, IA, to Michael and Catherine (Tobin) Murphy. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Clinton. He attended Loras College in Dubuque. During World War II, Charlie served with the 357th Airborne (Army Air Corps) in England, France and Germany. He married Grace Shanahan on Oct. 8, 1949. Charlie worked as an electrician at E.I.DuPont for 42 years. He was an avid athlete and sports fan, coaching his sons and many other boys in Little League Baseball. Along with his wife, he attended his four children's sporting events, home and away. He later attended many of his grandchildren's school activities. Charlie was an Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. He was a member of the AmVets, VFW and Moose clubs. After retiring, he enjoyed spending winters playing golf, horseshoes, table tennis and cards with his many friends and extended family in Tucson, AZ. Charlie was out-going and gregarious. His Irish twinkle will be missed. Charlie had many friends among the staff and residents at the Alverno. Charlie is survived by sons Dennis, Butner, NC; Tim (Jan Liggett), Iowa City; Gerry (Trudy), Clinton; and daughter Melissa Murphy, New York, NY; sister-in-law Lorraine Murphy; grandsons Troy, Matthew, Eric and Ryan Murphy; great-grandsons Alex and Austin Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Grace; brothers Francis, John, Ed, Jerry, Jim and sister Rosemary (Foley). Memorials may be made to the Alverno or Prince of Peace High School.
