Benson, 86, a veteran of the Union army in the War Between the States died at his home and was one of the most respected citizens of this community. Funeral services were conducted today from the Warrior Creek Church and interment followed in the church cemetery, where the body of the man who wore the blue, will rest beside that of his wife, who preceded him to the grave several years ago. Mr. Benson is survived by two sisters; Mrs. Mary Etta Frost and Mrs. Lizzie Earl, both of New York. Another article said "that he had been in declining health since February and had pneumonia earlier during the winter and also suffered from heart trouble. He was found dead on his porch setting in his chair. The local report I have heard was that Mr. Ambrose Holcombe had been plowing on the farm and came by the porch where Mr. Benson was sitting on his way to put up the mule, and spoke to Mr. Benson. When Mr. Holcombe finished putting up the mule and came back by the porch where Mr. Benson was sitting, he was dead. Mr. Benson was baptized into the membership of Warrior Creek Baptist Church on August 22, 1886. He was a Private in Company B, 56th Regiment of the New York Regular Army, serving from Aug. 20, 1863 to Oct. 1865. He drew a pension from the National Government of $8 per month for his service.
