Description	:	Charles and Clara McKenna were residents of Tama County during part of their lives. They lived a number of years in Black Hawk County returning to Tama County in 1953 until their deaths. Charles' grandparents, John and Mary McKenna, were immigrants of Ireland. John was born in 1801 at County Armagh and died March 1, 1888. Mary was born at County Tipperary and died August 22, 1884 at age 75. Charles' grandparents, John and Mary McKenna, were immigrants of Ireland. John was born in 1801 at County Armagh and died March 1, 1888. Mary was born at County Tipperary and died August 22, 1884 at age 75. Their son was John Patrick McKenna who was born June 1, 1857 at Cincinnati, Ohio and came to Clinton County, Iowa at age five. On June 8, 1881 he married Margaret Sarah Cavanaugh at Blessing Church in southern Black Hawk County. He died November 8, 1935. His wife was born March 10, 1857, the daughter of Charles Cavanaugh and Sarah Casher or Cashen. She died in December 1921. Mr. Cavanaugh was born February 12, 1829 and died February 3, 1911. Mrs. Cavanaugh was born June 10, 1832 and died January 20,1906. John Patrick and Margaret Sarah McKenna's children were Coletta Mahoney, Mary (Mae) Duffy, Charles William, Elizabeth "Libb" Emerson-Leland, Margaret Lurene Cranny, Sarah Ethel Loop, Kathryn Mabel Kelly, John Leroy and Frances Veronica. Charles William was born November 22, 1884 in Lincoln Township, Black Hawk County. He married Clara Loretta Hayes on November 26, 1912. She was born in Buckingham Township, Section 1, of Tama County on December 19, 1890. She was the daughter of John and Ellen (McBride) Hayes. John was born June 22, 1865 and died January 2, 1949. John was the son of Thomas and Margaret (Frawley) Hayes. They also were natives of Ireland. Thomas was born May II, 1836 and died November 7, 1929. Margaret was born May 5, 1837 and died November 22, 1907. They were married in the spring of 1861 and left a week later to come to the United States and live in Rockford, Illinois. They came to Tama County in 1869. Clara's mother, Ellen McBride, was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah McBride. Sarah died in 1887 at the age of 50 and Thomas died in 1921 at age 85. Ellen (McBride) Hayes was born October 24, 1864 and died March 24, 1938. John and Ellen Hayes' children were Clara McKenna, Marguerite Beenken, Louise Thornton, John (Jack), Thomas, Edward and Catherine Conry. Clara Loretta and Charles William McKenna's children were Marie, Maxine Nichols, Florence Yuska, Irene Brandt, Genevieve Carlson, John, Robert, Harold and Rita Eckart. Charles and Clara lived in Black Hawk County following their marriage. All of their children were born in Black Hawk County. In March 1953 both Charles and Clara and Harold and his family who were farming together moved to Tama County, Geneseo Township, Section 7 known as the Lambert farm. In March 1954 they moved to Section 10, Geneseo Township to a 40 acre farm they bought north of the Geneseo School. They still farmed extra ground in Black Hawk County. Charles and Clara remained on this farm until Charles death November 13, 1974. He lived to be a few days short of his 90th birthday. Clara remained on the farm a short time and then moved to an apartment in Waterloo. Due to failing health she spent her last days at Friendship Village and died January 26, 1977. They were members of St. Mary's of Mount Carmel Church at Eagle Center, Iowa. by Harold E. McKenna
