"Charles Walter Oaks, 20 years old & a son of Mrs. C.C. Oaks, living on a farm north of Emerson, was killed in an automobile accident Thursday evening at 8:30 in Council Bluffs. Omaha World Herald article on Friday Running his automobile at terrific speed without lights, Walter Oaks, residing 5 miles north of Emerson, crashed into a carriage occupied by 3 young ladies at 19th & W. Broadway Thursday night & received injuries which resulted in his death a 1/2 hour later as he was being carried into Edmundson Hospital. Ernanuel Nelson, night clerk at the Arcade Hotel in Omaha, who was riding with him, received cuts & bruises about the head, wrist & other portions of his body. Both men were shot through the glass windshield of the machine & Oak's neck was broken. He recieved other cuts about the head. By some miraculous circumstance the occupants of the buggy, Misses Jessie Maynes, Dorothy Hudson & Edna Shreve escaped death, although the first two may be seriously injured. Oaks came to Omaha Thursday morning & spent the day there. The machine was an Auburn roadster & had been bought but recently. The young man was about the Arcade Hotel during the evening & invited Nelson to take a ride with him. Oakes was coming toward Council Bluffs when the accident happened. The young ladies heard the machine coming behind them, but not seeing any light they believed it was about a block to the rear. They turned close to the curb & in the next instant it seemed the crash came. Witnesses say the machine was going 45 mph. The buggy & its occupants were thrown into the air & the buggy was smashed into kindling wood. The auto apparently plowed its way underneath the buggy & turned turtle. The girls landed beside the road, bruised & badly frightened. The 2 men in the car went through the windshield & landed some distance from the machine. The hair on one side of Nelson's head was shaved off as smoothly as if done with a razor. Dr. R.B. Tubbs, the city physician, hurried to the scene, & the 2 injured men were loaded into another automobile & rushed to the Edmondson Hospital. Oaks died as they reached the hospital & Nelson was reported as resting easily at a late hour last night. An examination of the wrecked auto showed the acetylene gas tank was empty, which explains the absence of lights. One of the emergency brakes was set. The remains were taken for burial to Emerson cemetery & the funeral was held at the Emerson Methodist church on Sunday at 2:30.
