"John" Cozort, Sr. passed from this life peacefully under the compassionate care of the staff at Country Villa-Riverview located in Susanville, CA on Tuesday evening October 9th, 2012. John as he preferred to be called was born in Hammond, Oklahoma to Abraham and Iva (Fesmire) Cozort on June 25, 1916. John as he preferred to be called was born in Hammond, Oklahoma to Abraham and Iva (Fesmire) Cozort on June 25, 1916. Raised along with eight other brothers the family banned together to support themselves doing mainly farm work. At the age of 18 John joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was assigned to Wyoming and in 1936 he left the Corps to follow his parents to California where they settled in San Jose. A year later John followed his brother to the Northeastern California Lumber community of Westwood where he began work as a waiter in the company's mess hall. He later went to work in the mill as a lumber straightener while also learning several other job positions and was eventually promoted to the position of millwright in the dry kiln. At the onset of World War II, inspired by the attack on Pearl Harbor, John joined the war effort as a member of the U.S. Navy. Following a three week boot camp he was shipped to Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the U.S.S. Ralph Talbot DD390, a destroyer which had survived the attack. He advanced through the ranks to Water Tender 2nd Class before his honorable discharge in September of 1945. He survived numerous campaigns in the Pacific to include the Solomon Islands. John returned to his position as a millwright with Fruit Growers Supply Company along with his new wife and to this union a son was born. The marriage later ended in divorce. While working nights as a bartender at the Meadows outside of Westwood he met a pretty young school teacher named Rose Cobo an encounter that led to the couple's marriage in Lovelock, Nevada on June 4, 1949 and to this union a daughter and son were added. Upon the closing of Fruit Growers Supply Company, John went to work for the Collins Pine mill in Chester where he retired as the planning mill millwright decades later with a reputation for hard work and good humor.. Upon his moving to Chester John was recruited into the local VFW Post and later became a member of the local American Legion Post. As a Life Member of the Harry Doble Post 664 John served as commander on numerous occasions as well as a number of other positions with the Post. He went on to serve his fellow veterans as a state representative for both the VFW and the American Legion. John stayed in contact with his fellow shipmates on the Ralph Talbot (RT) and attended many of their reunions throughout the country with Rose or his children. John joined his shipmates for a commemorative tour of New Zealand in 2004. John was a devoted member of the former Christ the King Catholic Church and was a longtime member of their Men's Club. Along with selling tickets for all the church functions you could always find him around town selling poppies and flags fundraising for the local veterans Posts. He enjoyed "puttering" in his shop and was always there to repair his neighbor's goods or maintain their yards. He ran the Senior Bingo and helped workers of the Wildwood nutrition programs for years. In passing John leaves his children; Charles W. Cozort, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Sacramento, CA, Colette M. Cozort of Chester, CA, and Everett L. Cozort of Fair Oaks, CA grandchildren; DeeAnn Walker and her husband Gary, Wendy L. Knowles and her husband Jay, Jonathan Cozort and Nathan Bauer along with seven great grandchildren. He joins his loving wife of 52 years, Rose who passed from this life in 2002 along with all of his siblings in their eternal home.
