Description	:	Civil War Co. D.,21st Inf., Conn. Vols. age 71 Charles W. Nichols, 71, died about 8 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of his son, Charles T. Nichols in Mansfield Center. The end followed a two months illness and was due to a thrombus in the brain. Mr. Nichols was born in Mansfield January 26, 1840, the son Thomas and Laura (Coburn) Nichols. Farming was his life work. The end followed a two months illness and was due to a thrombus in the brain. Mr. Nichols was born in Mansfield January 26, 1840, the son Thomas and Laura (Coburn) Nichols. Farming was his life work. He left the plow to enlist in Company D. Twenty-first Connecticut Volunteers, going south with the regiment from Norwich. At the battle of Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864, he lost an arm when a confederate bullet struck him in the wrist and plowed it's way upward, lodging finally in the muscles of the upper arm. This retired Mr. Nichols from active service. His son still has the bullet which did the work, and it has always seemed to him that the bit of lead was of English make. Returning to Mansfield, Mr. Nichols married Harriet Hutchins, who died June 14, 1906. One son with whom he resided, survives, together with five grandchildren, a brother Melvin L. Nichols of Conantville, and one sister , Mrs. Ellen Lockwood of Pawtucket, R.I. Mrs. Nichols was of an unassuming nature, which kept him from holding any public office. He was well known throughout this section and his character was one to command respect. While it existed, he was a member of Mansfield post G.A.R.
