On November 13, 1870, he was united in marriage to Martha Ann Shearer, who departed this life less than three weeks ago and was the last funeral in the old church, and this is the first in the new. Copeland was born July 2nd, 1847 and departed this life Jan. 18, 1911, aged sixty-three years, seven months and 16 days. On November 13, 1870, he was united in marriage to Martha Ann Shearer, who departed this life less than three weeks ago and was the last funeral in the old church, and this is the first in the new. To them were born six children, four of whom are still living, namely Mrs. Job Wilson, Mrs. Will Westover, Mrs. Clark Weidman and Mr. C. E. Copeland. The deceased came to Iowa from Indiana when yet a young man and has resided here ever since until last September, when he moved to Colorado. Brother Copeland has only two sisters living of his own family and they are Mrs. Evaline Ellmore, of Nevada, Iowa and Mrs. Mary Shearer of Sioux City, Iowa. Mr. Copeland belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church and had been a faithful member, well spoken of by his brothers and sisters in the church. He had not removed his membership from this class. He was also one of the great host of heroes of whom this land is proud - the Boys of 1861 - that laid their lives on the alter of their country and redeemed it from awful disgrace and dissolution that threatened it in that dark hour of peril. He was a member of the 11th Indiana Infantry, and received honorable discharge. As to character he had excellent qualities. As a husband and father, he was faithful and indulgent. As a neighbor he was brotherly and kind and obliging. As a man he was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. He has followed a loving wife quickly to his reward. May his soul rest in peace. His funeral was held from the church of which he was a member, on Saturday, Jan. 21, 1911 and this sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. J. Wesley Stokesbury, from John 11:28, and the remains laid to rest by the side of his wife in Hillside Cemetery.
