The accident occurred on a gravel road, 1 mile north of Eureka Center. Nielsen and a neighbor had attended a hog sale at Adair. While visiting with a friend who owned the motorcycle, Nielsen asked to take a ride on it. From the marks on the roadway where the accident occurred, Nielsen lost control of the machine when it struck a rough spot in the road. He was thrown from the machine and sustained a broken neck. Charles Wilbur Nielsen was born in Omaha, Neb., March 9, 1923, and when two and a half months old was taken into the home of James and Frances Nielsen to be forever loved and cherished as their son. He attended Avondale rural school and graduated from Fontanelle school with the class of 1942. He was a member of the Bridgewater Church of Christ, later transferring his membership tot the Avondale Methodist Church. On December 19, 1942, he was united in marriage to Carol Louise Westphal of Greenfield, and to this union were born two children, David Charles and Janice Carol. For physical reasons, Charles was not permitted to service in the army, so his attention and time were turned to farming. He worked on the Joe Hamilton farm two years and in the spring of 1945 he moved to the Nielsen family farm where he had since lived. Charles was full of life and fun, was an active Farm Bureau member, and interested in his community. At the time of his death he was serving as school director. He attained the age of 31 years, 2 months and 18 days. He was a faithful husband and father. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Carol; one son, David aged 10; a daughter, Janice, aged 8; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Nielsen; his sister June and her husband, Francis Chappell and their two daughters, Rose Marie and Susan; his aged grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Keyser of Calif.; his wife's family, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Westphal, Esther and Estelle, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Westphal and daughters, Kenneth Blazek and a host of friends and relatives.
