Description	:	Charles William "Bill" Cole, 78, of rural Holdrege died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Bertrand Nursing Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Kenton Birtell officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege with military honors by American Legion Post 66 in conjunction with the Nebraska National Guard Honors Team. On May 1, 1951, he married Lila Pfeiffer in Holdrege. She died June 20, 2000. Survivors include his daughters, Shelley Cole-Allen and her husband, Matthew, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Linda Karlson and her husband, Dudley, of Holdrege; son, Steven Cole and his wife, Teresa, of Holdrege; grandchildren, Sarah and Marissa Allen, Kayla and Jared Karlson and Brenna and Colten Cole; sister, Beverly Gray and her husband, Lawrence, of Grand Island; brother-in-law, Herschel Sheffield of Wilcox; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He began his primary education at District 23 in Phelps County and later attended Randolph School in Lincoln when the family moved from the farm for a few years. The family then returned to Holdrege, where he graduated from Holdrege High School in 1948. Following his education, he farmed with his father. He married Lila Mae Pfeiffer of Elwood at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege. On Sept. 11, 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in the 5th Regimental Combat Team of the 3rd Battalion Headquarters Company. He served as a combat construction specialist overseas and was honored with the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Purple Heart. On June 10, 1953, he was honorably discharged from the Army and returned home to the farm. On Feb. 28, 1954, he was confirmed in the Missouri Synod Lutheran faith by the Rev. W.E. Heddrick. On May 31, 1958, he received a Certificate of Achievement after 24 months of training in the Institutional On-Farm Program offered at Holdrege High School by the Nebraska-Division of Vocational Education. His focus was the development of the farm and working the cow/calf operation. He was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Family was of utmost priority in his life, and he especially enjoyed following his grandchildren's activities. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law, Berdena Sheffield and Helen Fong and her husband, Doyle; and brother-in-law, Floyd Pfeiffer and his wife, Beth.
