Description	:	Charles William Massie "Charlie," 68, of Amherst, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at his home. Born in Lynchburg, Oct. 27, 1944, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Massie and Zella Mae Campbell Massie. In earlier years, he had been employed with Rock Tenn as a welder. He was a U.S. Navy Seabee, a Vietnam veteran and was a member of the Piney River Baptist Church and the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department. Read More	Charles William Massie "Charlie," 68, of Amherst, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at his home. Born in Lynchburg, Oct. 27, 1944, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Massie and Zella Mae Campbell Massie. In earlier years, he had been employed with Rock Tenn as a welder. He was a U.S. Navy Seabee, a Vietnam veteran and was a member of the Piney River Baptist Church and the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department. With eyes twinkling, a smile and a handshake, he would give you a peppermint every time he saw you. He is survived by his beloved wife of 11 years, Marcia Robertson; sons, Chris Massie (Tina) of Madison Heights, Dwayne Massie (Janet) of Monroe, and Wayne Massie (Cheryl) of Amherst; brother, Tommie Massie of Amherst; sisters, Patricia Wood of Piney River, and Janet Saunders of Vinton; 12 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other loving family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Marie Proffitt Massie. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers, Sandra Nappier, Melissa Wheeler and Lula Wheeler for all their love, care and support. A funeral service was held Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Piney River Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald, the Rev. W.T. Wright and the Rev. Jason Canipe. Burial followed in Harewood Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.
