MAY 31, 1936 - DECEMBER 5, 1958 LOCAL BOY DEAD IN PLANE CRASH Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Green Cove Springs, last Sunday afternoon for Charles William West, known by all as "Billy". Interment followed in the Middleburg Cemetery, Rev. Richard Lee Bartholomew officiating. Ralph W. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The deceased, 22 year old son of Mrs. D. W. Pool, was killed when a light plane he was piloting plunged into the Banana River, near Patrick Air Force Base, near Cocoa. He joined the Air Force in 1956, and was in the 1278 Airways and Communications Service detachment at Patrick Air Force Base. He was a Clay County High School graduate and student at the University of Florida for two years. Memorial services were held Tuesday, also, at Patrick Air Force Base Chapel, with the family attending. Survivors include, besides his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Pool, his father, C. W. West of Orlando; half-sister, Beth Pool; grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Brooker and other relatives. Sgt. Paul M. Warters, a friend and also official military escort, accompanied the casket to Green Cove Springs. Other Air Force friends who came to Green Cove Springs for the services included: Bob Hogan, John Clawson, John Erb, David DeArmond, Richard Lucovitz and Gene Wilson. Pallbearers, boyhood friends and schoolmates, were: Stewart Geiger, Thomas Glennan, Jr., Thomas Ellis, Tracy Saunders, Jr., Anthony Smith, Frank Schiele, Jerry Carswell, Lee Knowles and David Ivey. MAY 31, 1936 - DECEMBER 5, 1958 PILOT DIES IN BANANA RIVER FALL A light plane plunged into the Banana River just west of here today, killing its pilot. Authorities said the single-engine Cessna fell into the river 100 yards west of the runway while making an approach to a landing there. The Air Force identified the victim as Airman 2.C. Charles West, 22, of the 1278 Airways and Communications Service detachment there. West was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Pool, Green Cove Springs. Witnesses said West apparently banked too sharply on his turn into the landing run and plummeted into the water. West was a member of the Patrick Aero Club, a flying club with four light planes. Mr. West was a native of Green Cove Springs. He attended the University of Florida for two years and had served in the Air Force for two years. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. D. W. Pool of Green Cove Springs; his father, Charles William West of Orlando; a half sister, Miss Beth Pool of Green Cove Springs and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Brooker of Green Cove Springs. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 pm at the St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Green Cove Springs, with the Rev. Richard Lee Bartholomew, officiating. Interment will be in Middleburg Cemetery. MAY 31, 1936 - DECEMBER 5, 1958 LIGHT PLANE CRASH KILLS CAPE FLIER - MOTOR FAILS, CRAFT HITS BANANA RIVER A/2c Charles W. West, 22, was killed when a Cessna 140 aircraft owned by the Patrick Air Force Base Aero Club crashed into the Banana River about 100 yards offshore west of the base, while attempting to land at the field about 9:50 am yesterday. West, who was assigned to a detachment which maintains radar equipment for aircraft landings, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Pool, of Lewis Dr., Green Cove Springs. An edge of the tail tip glinting in the morning sun in the river was the only indication of the tragic accident as reporters arrived near the scene. It was reported that the small plane was circling Patrick Air Force Base, coming in for a landing when the engine apparently stalled and the aircraft spun into the river. Young West was assigned to 1278-1 AACS Detachment at Air Force Base Airways and Air Communication Service. Cause of the engine failure will not be determined until the plane is taken out of the river.
