He attended Soap Lake School before attending Ephrata High School, which he had to leave to take over the running of the family farm. A long time Colockum and Jump Off Ridge resident, Charlie died July 30, 2005, at Cashmere, WA from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). He was born on September 13, 1929, on High Hill at Soap Lake, WA to James Willis and Menette (Daisy Ninette) (MacArthur) Nichols. He attended Soap Lake School before attending Ephrata High School, which he had to leave to take over the running of the family farm. Charles started driving combine when he was only 12 and that same year became the youngest clerk ever at the Soap Lake Grocery. He always said that he learned his math while clerking. Charlie and Marma Farmer were married at Soap Lake, WA in 1948, where they lived for two years before buying and settling at Skyline Ranch on Stemilt-Jump Off Ridge. There they raised four daughters while also raising cattle, hay, grain and other crops. He also had a sawmill and lumbered on Jump Off Ridge. Charlie was a naturalist and a steward of the land as he did most of his ranching using his draft horses and was well known for his quality animals. Some of his old buddies tried to beat him at the horse pulling competitions, but Charlie always won with his well-conditioned team of draft horses. He said he needed a new room built onto his house just to hold all of the ribbons and trophies he had won with his teams. He displayed them proudly and always had a story or two to tell about his horses to friends and neighbors. In 1994, Charlie retired from ranching and was briefly married to Pearl Marker. Then in 1998, he and June Turner of Cashmere were married and have lived in Kingsbury Canyon up the Colockum. They have been raising cattle, horses, poultry and peacocks. Charlie and June installed their first wind turbine in 2002, and they put their second turbine up, a Bergey 10K wind turbine, in 2004. Both are strong believers in sing renewable resources and have been participating in the SNAP Program (green power) for several years. Charlie played his fiddle professionally and belonged to, and was a past President of, the Old Time Fiddler Association. He belonged to the Eagles (FOE), NRA and was a past President of the Washington State Cattlemen's Association. He was a recipient of the Citizens Pioneer Award from the Malaga/Colockum community, who all get together at least once a year for their annual picnic. Charlie is survived by his loving and devoted wife, June, at the family ranch; his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Bob Butt of Ephrata; his children, Sharlee and Jess Grimes of Wenatchee, Delsa and Dale Nordin of Omak, Nancy and Charlie Mabes of Wenatchee, and Mat and Barbara MacArthur of Moses Lake; step-children, Mark and Cindy Turner of Cashmere; his grandchildren, Gena Schuler of Wenatchee, Tom and Brian Nordin of Omak, Samantha Mabes-Vanhoven of Wenatchee, and step-grandchildren, Brandon and Megan Turner of Cashmere; he was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Matthew Hoch of Befair, Shawnda and Cheyann Mabes-Vanhoven and Kaylee Balser, all of Wenatchee. His special friends, Ed Hoch and Cindy Edwards. Our special gratitude to all of the wonderful caregivers at Cashmere Convalescent Center and the heartfelt understanding from Hospice, especially Marina. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, August 2, 2005, in the Colonial Chapel of the Jones and Jones Funeral Home, 21 S Chelan, Wenatchee, WA. A sharing time will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, August 5, 2005, at the Free Methodist Church, 1601 5th Street, Wenatchee, WA. A private family Burial Service will be conducted at Ephrata, WA following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the National Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Association, www.psp.org or to Hospice.
