Description	:	Charley Nelson, a farmer in Edna Township, Cass County, was born in Tranam, Denmark, September 14, 1876. He also had a twin brother, Andrew Nelson. They were the sons of John and Anna (Anderson) Nelson. When they were five years old, they came to Cass County and attended rural schools. Read More	Charley Nelson, a farmer in Edna Township, Cass County, was born in Tranam, Denmark, September 14, 1876. He also had a twin brother, Andrew Nelson. They were the sons of John and Anna (Anderson) Nelson. When they were five years old, they came to Cass County and attended rural schools. Charley grew to manhood in a manner typical of the times, which means that he was doing a man's work before his face ever felt a razor. His generation was destined to witness a period of vast and bewildering change. On August 29, 1906, Charley Nelson was united in marriage to Marie Pieken, who was born August 20, 1883. With the exception of one year in the Orient vicinity, they farmed all their married life southwest of Massena, in Edna Township, Cass County, Iowa. Charles and Marie Nelson were the proud parents of seven children. Edwin Nelson was born May 2, 1907, and died April 19, 1985. LeRoy Nelson was born June 28, 1908. Harold Nelson was born March 2, 1911, and died November 3, 1983. Glen Nelson was born September 27, 1912. Evelyn (Nelson) Walker was born April 23, 1914. Doris (Nelson) Lehman was born March 12, 1917. Della (Nelson) Holste was born July 30, 1924, and died January 31, 1963. Charley Nelson farmed with horses and horse machinery in those days. He lived through the Depression of the early 1930's, the drought, and saw tractors replace horse power, electricity came to his farm, and many other changes. Charley had a pair of white horses and a wagon which was his way of transportation and took the grandchildren for a ride on the buckboard of that wagon. Charley Nelson died on April 21, 1968. Marie (Pieken) Nelson died on August 25, 1943. Charley and Andrew Nelson were twins and many people could not tell the apart when they were in town or at the sale barn. Though he left the family nothing in the way of material things, the legacy he left behind is more valuable than the combined wealth of the world.
