He passed away on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 23 days. Charlie grew in the New Market area and graduated from New Market High School in 1964. Following high school he served in Army National Guard for 6 years. On June 20, 1971 he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Harms at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda. This union was blessed with four sons, Kevin, Jason, Chris and Dale. Charlie was a truck driver most of his working life. He started to drive a stock truck when he was in high school for Bill Ross. He later drove for Wyleen Miller from 1964 to 1973, the Clarinda Elevator from 1973 to 1980 and he drove for the Coin Elevator from 1980 until 1994 when they closed the elevator. Charlie then worked for Pella Corporation from 1994 until his health forced him to retire. He loved driving his trucks. In his younger years Charlie drove a stock car at the Adams County Speedway in Corning. He also enjoyed the outdoors whether it was teaching his boys how to hunt and fish, or camping with his family. He was known for shooting hedge balls for target practice. One thing he was proud of was he drove trucks over 1 million miles and only had one accident, and that was due to the brakes failing on the truck he was driving and he wasn't able to stop. In his later years when he was unable to work, he enjoyed taking trips to the casinos. His true love was his family, especially his grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elenor Selby; and a step son, Jeff Woodman. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Long of College Springs; his children, Kevin Long and Karrie DeJong of Clarinda, Jason Long of Shenandoah, Chris Long of College Springs, Dale Long and his wife Dora of Shenandoah; six grandchildren, Sydney Barnart, Kemper Long, Olivia Long, Dennis Stammer, Heather DeJong, Blaine De Jong; two sisters, Linda Mangold and her husband Richard of Washington, Barbara Harvey and her husband Carol of Braddyville; a brother, Rodney Long of New Market; a brother-in-law, Larry Selby of Shambaugh; an aunt, Florence Ross of New Market; along with many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda with Rev. Daryl Tompkins officiating. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery near New Market with military honors accorded by the American Legion Sergy Post #98 of Clarinda. Visitation with the family present took place on Saturday morning, Dec. 26 from 10-11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda. Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House, Porter's Lake Lutheran Center, Boy Scout Troop #215 in Shenandoah, Iowa, or Clarinda EMS.
