H. Stewart, and Mrs. Ruth Short, 38, both of Norfolk, were instantly killed and four others injured, one critically, when an automobile driven at a high rate of speed by Arthur Dewey, Norfolk, plowed into a car piloted by Harry Miller, 68, prominent Stanton Banker, as the latter was driving on to the driveway of the Stewart home at 1605 Norfolk avenue at 12:49 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Stewart died of a broken neck, and Mrs. Short of a crushed skull and a throat injury. The injured are: Dewey, 28, who is in a sanitarium suffering from a severe concussion of the brain, a crushed chest and other injuries. Miss Irene Soll, 35, Stanton, who has three broken ribs, a broken left arm and other injuries. Miller, who is suffering from cuts about his head, including a deep gash on his forehead, and other injuries including torn ligaments in his knee. Judge Stewart, 56, minor cuts and bruises and shock. Not Ctitically Hurt Miller, Miss Soll and Judge Stewart are in a Norfolk hospital, to which they were taken shortly after the accident. Miller's condition this morning was described as "pretty good," while the others was said to be good. Shortly after the accident it was thought Dewey would not live through the night, but about 10 o'clock this morning his mind started to clear and he was given a chance to survive unless complications set in from his serious chest injuries. His condition early this afternoon was unchanged. Miller and Miss Soll were taking Judge and Mrs. Stewart home from downtown where they had attended the Goodwill day celebration and spent about an hour in a cafe'. Dewey and Mrs. Short, police said, were returning to Norfolk from Shady Inn, beer tavern west of Norfolk, where they ere seen a short time before the tragic accident. Car Struck Broadside Miller, as approached the driveway to the Stewart home, stopped his car to let another machine coming from the west go by. He then started to drive on to the driveway as Dewey, driving Mrs. Short's automobile, came over the hill on West Norfolk Avenue, and crashed broadside against Miller's automobile. Seated beside Miller in the front seat was Judge Stewart. Miss Soll and Mrs. Stewart were in the rear seat, the former on the left hand side and the latter on the right hand side. Mrs. Short's car struck Miller's car just back of the front seat with a terrific impact, just where Mrs. Stewart was seated. Mrs. Stewart's neck was broken, one of her ankles was broken, and other bones fractured. Throat is Cut Mrs. Short was seated beside Dewey in her coupe. Impact of the collision hurled her head foremost against the windshield, shattering it. Her throat was badly cut and her skull crushed. Dewey was thrown against the steering wheel, which was bent over when he struck his chest against it. None of the six persons in the accident were hurled from the cars, and the machines did not overturn. The motor in the Short car was driven back against the cowl, the impact of the collision being so terrific. The radiator was badly smashed and the cowl driven back towards the seat. Miller's car was caved in just in front of the right rear wheel. The glass was shattered on the right hand side rear window, and the automobile otherwise badly damaged. Witness Crash Riding close behind the Short car, and at the top of the hill when the crash occurred, were Eldon Hoover, Miss Vera Kalaf, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Eppler and the latters sister who followed the Short get out of the car, but was too weak to assist Hoover and Eppler, although he tried to. They first helped Miller from the car, and then tried to get the rear door open to get Miss Soll and Mrs. Stewart out of the machine but couldn't open the door. They then lifted Dewey from the other car, and later assisted in taking Miss Soll and Mrs. Stewart's body out. Al Raper, assistant engineer for radio station WJAG, who was walking about 300 yards from the scene of the accident, was one of the first persons to get to the injured and dead. Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Miner, living across the street from the Stewart home, heard the crash. Assist Victims Among those who assisted in lifting the accident victims from the wreckage were; R. J. Becker, Battle Creek, who was driving close behind the Miller car; Dr. Miner, Joe Martin, 1609 Norfolk avenue, who was awakened by the crash; Frank Crawford, who rooms at 107 South Sixteenth street; Frank Beckner, 1503 Norfolk avenue, and Max Pflug, Norfolk, who was driving a short distance away when the accident occurred. Beckner said he had gone to bed a short time before the accident, and after hearing the crash went to the window and heard people calling for help. "it was a pitiful sight" he said. Martin assisted Miller to the elevator in the hospital, and at that time, the Stanton banker had not realized he and his friends had been in an accident. He kept asking Martin if there had been an accident, and who had been injured. The unconscious Dewey and Mrs. Short's body were in a crumpled pile on the floor of the car. Judge Stewart was dazed by a hard blow on his head, and didn't realize what had happened. It was not until this morning that he was told of Mrs. Stewart's death. Robert, son of Mrs. Short, was asleep at his home at the time of his mother's death. Son Collapses James Stewart, son of Judge and Mrs. Stewart, who was at home at the time, upon learning of the tragedy, collapsed and had to be taken to a hospital. He is suffering from shock, but was able to leave the hospital this morning. Dewey was employed by Mrs. Short in the latter's South Side Liquor Store. Mrs. Short recently had been given permission by the city council to transfer her liquor license to the old Elkhorn Life Insurance building at Sixth street and Norfolk avenue. Mrs. Short is survived by her husband and one son. Another son preceded her in death and is buried in a Pierce cemetery. Funeral services for Mrs. Stewart will be held at the home Friday afternoon, with the Rev. E. Merle Adams in charge. The hour of the services will be announced later. Burial will be at Pierce. Mrs. Short is survived by one son, Robert, former Norfolk high school athlete. Some time ago she was divorced from William Short, formerly of Norfolk, who now lives at Winner, S. D. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carrico, Meadow Grove, and one brother, Peter Carrico, Winner, S. D. One sister preceded her in death. Funeral services for Mrs. Short will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Wolt- Berge chapel, with the Rev. E. Merle Adams, minister of the First Congregational church, in charge. Interment will be in Prospect Hill cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Becker, Battle Creek, who were with the Stewarts, Miller and Miss Soll in the cafe, had first planned to take the Stewarts home, but later the group had changed their plans and Miller took them in his car. The Beckers were following the Miller car at the time of the collision. This is the first fatal automobile accident inside the city limits of Norfolk since December, 1934. H. Stewart and Mrs. Ruth Short, both of this city, died in a sanitarium here at 11:20 o'clock last night. Dewey suffered a crushed chest, which later caused double pneumonia, and a severe brain concussion, in the accident. He never fully regained consciousness after the accident. He is survived by his wife, two children, one 14 months old and the other a month old; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Dewey, 208 Monroe avenue; two brothers and one sister. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Dewey was injured when the car he was driving crashed against the side of the machine driven by Harry Miller, Stanton banker, as the latter was driving on to the driveway of the Stewart home as he was taking Judge and Mrs. Stewart to their residence. Mr. Miller, who still is in a hospital, rested well last night and is slowly recovering from his injuries. Miss Irene Soll, also of Stanton, who was injured in the accident, also is recovering in the hospital. It will probably be several more days before either Mr. Miller or Miss Soll will be able to leave the hospital. NORFOLK DAILY NEWS; Norfolk, Nebraska; Monday, Aug 31, 1936; page 2 Funeral Record Mrs. Ruth Short Funeral rites for Mrs. Ruth Short, 39, Norfolk, who lost her life in an automobile crash here early Wednesday morning were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Wolt-Berge chapel by the Rev. E. Merle Adams, minister of the First Congregational church. Ruth Carrico, her maiden name, was born at Meadow Grove, May 1, 1897. When she was 16 years old she was married at Albion to William B. Short, now living at Winner, S. D., their wedding day being in April, 1914. Since then she has made her home at Norfolk. She is survived by her son, Robert, former Norfolk high school athlete; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carrico, Meadow Grove, and one brother, Leo J. (Pete) Carrico, also of Meadow Grove, who has been employed of late at Winner. A nephew, Kenneth Hannen, resides at Norfolk. She was preceded in death by one sister. Pallbearers were; Junior Wehrer, Jack Levin, Sidney Rosenthal, Lyle Weatherholt, Lyle Yeoman, and Jake Salisbury. Burial was made in Prospect Hill cemetery.
