Waterloo Daily Courier on April 13, 1967, Waterloo, Iowa VINTON An autopsy was being performed Thursday on young Urbana woman who died late Wednesday afternoon from injuries received in a March 24 explosion. The victim, Mrs. Cheryl Carman, 21, died at University Hospitals, apparently of burns suffered in the blast. Keith Mossman, Benton County Attorney, said Thursday that the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation had ordered the autopsy. The case has been under investigation by the state fire marshal's office, the state bureau and the Benton County attorney's office since the blast. Mrs. Cheryl Carman, was alone in the house at 6 a.m. when the explosion lifted the dwelling off the foundation. Her husband, Ray, 20, told authorities he and his wife had an argument, that he left the house at 3 a.m. and knew nothing about the fire and explosion. Authorities said the blast apparently occurred when she turned on the gas in the kitchen stove. A search for Carman ended 30 hours later when he was found walking along a ditch about five miles south of Urbana and nine miles from a spot where his abandoned car was discovered with a gas can still in his hand. Carman told officials he drove away from the house but the car became stuck in the mud. He said he left the vehicle behind and just started walking. (He was later acquitted of her death citing lack of evidence. It's well known he was responsible for her death) Services for Mrs. Carman will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Urbana Christian Church. Burial will be in cemetery.
