He was born June 10, 1930 in St. Francis, Kansas, the son of Charles R. and Eva M. (Murphy) Gay. Growing up in Abilene, Chet attended local schools, graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1949 and attended graduate classes in pursuit of construction and real-estate . He was owner and operator of Chet Gay Construction. On May 9, 1955, Chet married Eunice Jean Brown in Lawrence. All of their married life was spent in Abilene. He enjoyed spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren, golfing, flying and boating. Chet was a member of Abilene First United Methodist Church. Elks, Lions and Isis Shrine. He had served on the Board of Directors of Associated Contractors of Kansas, Chamber of Commerce Industrial Committee and the Committee to Revise Abilene Building Codes. Chet was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Patsy Riner and Joyce Seeley. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 10th, at the Abilene First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:30 – 6:30 PM Monday, February 9th, at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Abilene First United Methodist Church or the Dickinson County Historical Society.
