Description	:	Chester B. "Chet" Taber, 84, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died at his home from natural causes on Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, October 20, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor Bruce Zimmermann officiating. Burial will follow in the Eldora City Cemetery with military honors provided by Hoover-Eiserman post 542 of the American Legion. Visitation is from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Chet was born October 28, 1921 at the Sherman Ranch near Crawford, Kansas, son of Charles R. and Cora E. (Highley) Taber. He was raised in Kansas and moved to the Eldora area in 1939. He was a World War II Veteran serving with the U.S. Marine Corps from July of 1942 to December of 1945. On October 18, 1963 Chet was united in marriage to Gertrude Elizabeth Struck in Eldora. He worked as a machine operator for John Deere in Waterloo and then at Dayco Corporation in Eldora, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Hoover-Eiserman post 542 of the American Legion where he was a former commander. Chet had also served as mayor for the town of Steamboat Rock.Surviving is his wife, Gertrude; step-sons, William (Peggy) Prescott of Thompson, Iowa, James (Rosalie) Prescott of Klemme, Iowa, and Donald (Rita) Prescott of Woodbridge, Virginia; step-daughter, Elizabeth (Craig) Newburg of Boise, Idaho; sister, Audra Griffit of Pittsburg, Kansas; by 13 step-grandchildren and 25 step-great grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two brothers.
