He was born Jan. 1, 1910 at Gregory, South Dakota to Henry and Eva (Cross) Mahrt. He attended country school in Gregory. He married Mary Madsen in Biou Hills, South Dakota in 1930. They moved to Wanblee, SD in 1931. He worked as a ranch hand and also with the WPA. In 1936, , he moved to Oregon where he lived for three years. He worked in a sawmill while in Oregon. He returned to Wanblee in 1939 and ranched south of Reliance. In 1946, he moved to Oacoma where he drove a truck and also tended bar in Chamberlain until 1975. He is survived by three sons: William, Huron; and Jerry and Gary of Oacoma; two brothers, Ed, Rapid City; and Fenton of San Francisco, California; three sisters; Mae Hearth, Sacramento, Calif.;Faye Guptill, Klamath Falls, Oregon and Gerry Houchin, Kennebec, SD; nine grandchildren and ten great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1964, one daughter and one sister.
