The deceased leaves behind, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Johnson of McCool, three sisters and two brothers. They are Ivan M. of McCool; Clifford W. of Bradshaw; Mrs. Cecil Churchill of Buffalo, Wyo.; Mrs. Floyd Cooper of Lushton; and Irene who resides at home. Chester spent most of his life at home on the farm near McCool. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, Larkins Camp No. 834 of McCool, and also a member of the American Legion Post of this city. He entered the service of our country early in the fall of 1917 with the first quota of York County boys and after camp training spent over one year of active duty in France. His discharge papers show him to have taken part in several of the great offensive struggles under the unit belonging to the field artillery of the Twenty Sixth Yankee Division. He landed in Boston in May 1919 and returned home in June. Chester was of a very quiet disposition and formed a host of friendships. One of his special expressions of gratitude to his Divine Creator was that he should depart this life on his native country's soil. Ellis, soldier in the World War, passed away at the Lutheran Hospital on Saturday, following a long illness which was induced by inhaling gas and suffering exposure while engaged in his duties as a soldier across the seas. He returned from the war in weakened condition and death ended a long prolonged and increasing illness. Chester L. Johnson was born west of McCool on Nov. 9, 1889. He was the son of J. T. Johnson and one of six children. He grew to young manhood in this community. When the first draft was made Chester appeared for examination and was accepted for service. He went to Camp Funston, later to Camp Pike, and in April 1819, embarked at New York for overseas service. Arriving at Brest, he with his company was sent immediately to the front. He was a member of Battery C, 102 Artillery regiment of the 26th division. His first engagement was at Toule and he participated in all the offensives in that region, serving with distinction until the signing of the armistice. Exposure, the inhaling of gas and the rigorous life he lived as a soldier sapped his health and strength and after returning home he suffered a decline which resulted in his death from diabetes. The remains were removed to the undertaking rooms of Mets & Hitchcock and a guard of honor was placed by the Legion which was on duty until the hour of the funeral. A military funeral was held in the Congregational church on Monday afternoon. Members of the American Legion and the Legion Axillary attended in large numbers and the regimental band discoursed music for the funeral march. Rev. George J. Weber conducted an impressive service. A quartet composed by W. E. Nelson, J. M. Johnson, Wendell Froid, and C. H. Amadon, sang some beautiful selections. The remains were escorted to Greenwood cemetery where with appropriate ceremonies and with a volley and taps the remains of a soldier were laid to rest in the earth of that country for which he gave the full measure of his devotion. ________________________ Card of Thanks We shall ever remember in grateful appreciation the words of sympathy and the kindly deeds of friends and neighbors and especially the service of the boys of Legion and ladies of the Auxiliary whose ministries so greatly helped to lighten the burden in our great bereavement.
