In his early adult years he worked for John Hastie, and chauffeured for him while he was building the Capitol in Olympia. In his early adult years he worked for John Hastie, and chauffeured for him while he was building the Capitol in Olympia. He chauffeured Mr. Hastie between his home on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle and Olympia, and to the farm in Yelm. On March 3, 1928 he married his wife of 72 years, Verna Belle Rice. He worked for Weyerhaeuser Company until 1940. He farmed the rest of his life on his farms in Yelm, Rainier, and Oakville. He was very active in Grange and 4-H work, belonging to Deschutes Grange, Pamona, State, and National Grange for more than 60 years, being Past Master for many years. He served on Yelm School boards during the 1940s and 1950s. He was also a member of the Washington Cattleman's Association. He is survived by two sons, Lester, of Rainier, and Lloyd, and wife, Jeanette, of Yelm and Rainier; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Harold, Richard, and Robert; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 206 3rd Street S.E., Yelm, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27th, with burial to follow in Yelm Cemetery. The family suggest donations to the building fund at Emanuel Lutheran Church, or to the Alzheimer's Association of Washington.
