Born Sep 13, 1920 in Byersville to the late Oscar and Cora Munyon McGath, he resided in the area most of his life. Born Sep 13, 1920 in Byersville to the late Oscar and Cora Munyon McGath, he resided in the area most of his life. He was employed with the former Metropolitan Brick Co in Darlington for 22 years, and later as a bartender with the Moose Lodge for several years. A WWII U S Army veteran, he received the Purple Heart, Bronzee Star and Good Conduct medals. Mr Gath was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, a life member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 4579 and the Loyal Order of the Moose 467. His wife, Edna M Knight McGath, whom he married Oct 2, 1941, preceded him Aug 2, 2001. Survivors include two sons, Loraine ‘Butch’ McGath of St Cloud, FL and Tom McGath of E Palestine; a daughter, Joyce Blake of E Palestine; four sisters, Joann Woods and Bernice Lagusse, both of NV, Donna Hutson of Washingtonville, Sally McIntosh of E Palestine; a half brother, Clyde ‘Sonny’ Kennedy of MD; a half-sister, Lois Birch of Las Vegas; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home with Rev Ronald Spore officiating. Burial will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens in New Waterford. Military rites will be observed by the combined units of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579 and the American Legion Post 31. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 PM Friday.
