Description	:	Chester Monroe "Chess" Travis was born in Pennsylvania in 1835, the son of Martin Beatty and Isabella (Brown) Travis. He married Fannie Piatt on October 5, 1859 in Shelby County, Illinois. In 1870, the Federal Census indicates that Chess was well off financially with $12,000 in real property and $10,000 in personal property. Chess ran a livery stable in Helena. Chess and Fannie had several children, Lee, Norman, Clifford, and George. An article in the newspaper describes Chess well: "A Rough Trip. Mr. C. M. Travis, who has the contract for carrying the mail from Bozeman to Tongue River for the next four years, is examining his routes. Chess has had a pretty rough trip, being caught in the storm, has had to swim creeks, and encountered perils by field and flood, losing his watch, papers and clothing while helping the stage across Elk Creek. He, however, is up and a doing, and says he has got the best stage line in Montana, and intends to run it first class. He is the man that can do it, if any body can. – Bozeman Courier, May 9." (Helena Independent, 5/12/1878) On October 19, 1880, Chess died from pneumonia at the Dana House in Helena. He had been in failing health for some time and since he sustained a severe fall a few weeks before his death by being thrown from a vehicle in a runaway accident, although he had been seen on the streets just days before his death, few were aware that he was dangerously ill. Mr. Travis was one of the early settlers of Montana and had lived here shortly after Helena was a town. He was known by almost every person in the Territory. Chess was about 45 years of age. He left a wife, Fannie, and four sons, Lee, Norman, Clifford, and George. (Helena Independent, 10/20/1880) Chess has a tombstone disintegrated and unreadable. Section B, Row 2. NOTE: Chester's wife, Fannie (or Fanny), died in 1914 and is buried at the Greenwood Memorial Terrace, Spokane, Washington.
