The body was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville. Chester R. Shaffer, veteran of World War II went out to meet his master December 2, 1952 at the Veterans' Hospital in Iowa City after a lingering illness, at the age of 46 years, 8 months and 14 days. Born in Colesburg, in Delaware County, Iowa, March 19, 1906, he was a graduate of the Colesburg School, Gates College and took up his duties as assistant cashier in the bank at Waterville, Iowa, for many years. As a child he joined the Methodist Church and was active in the church there. He transferred to Mechanicsville after making his home here and was very active in all musical affairs. He was a member of the Modern Woodman of America and of the Busch Dennis Post No. 309. The past years he grew steadily worse from repeated attacks of his bodily ailments until the outward man could no longer resist and God took him home. Everything possible was done by medical science. Chet and DeLoris Thimmes were married February 11, 1933 in General Grant's pew in the Methodist Church, Galena, Illinois. They spent their married lives in Waterville and Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by a sister Mary and his father and leaves to mourn his loss, his wife DeLoris, mother, Mrs. Isabell Shaffer, two brothers, Clark and Ronald Shaffer, all of Colesburg; several nieces and a host of relatives and friends.
