At noon a co-operative family dinner will be enjoyed with members of their immediate family and all of their nieces and nephews in attendance. From 3 to 5 o'clock in the afternoon there will be an open house, and all friends of the well known couple are invited to call. Fifty years ago on next Tuesday, march 21, 1894, the couple went to the home of Rev. Uriah Patton, pastor of the Pious Chapel church located just east of the church, and were married. There were no attendants, but some of the neighbors hearing of the event gathered at the hoe. Rev. Patton had also officiated at the marriage of Mrs. Wickersham's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mattix. The couple lived for a year on the old Hickman place one mile north of their present farm, and then spent two years in Pulaski county. In 1897 they bought 100 acres of the farm upon which they now reside, and constructed their home. Since then they have added to the land and how have 330 acres. Mr. and Mrs. Wickersham have five children, Gerald, who operates the Monticello Auto Parts here; Ruth, at home; Orpha, teacher at Cheyenne, Wyo., Clay of Mishawaka; and Jerry of Brookston. Two sons, Randolph and Robert have passed away. The couple have two granddaughters, Joan and Sandra Wickersham, of Brookston. Not a single couple living in a five mile radius of their home when they were married is living there now, the couple recalls. During their fifty years of wedlock, Mr. and Mrs. Wickersham have seen much progress take place in the county. The radio and electricity have been two inventions that have revolutionized living in the country, and they get much enjoyment from both of them. Mr. Wickersham has been a farmer all his life, but retired from active farming three years ago, when he rented his fields. He learned to plow corn with one horse, and cradled the grain by hand. Mr. Wickersham is 74, and was born Dec. 16, 1869, in Cass township, the son of Leroy and Amanda (Bailey) Wickersham. The home was located on land now owned by Mr. Wickersham. Mrs Wickersham was formerly Rieuann Mattix, daughter of Jerry and Orphy (Bailey) Mattix, and was born Dec. 9, 1870, in Pulaski county, 5 1/2 miles north of their present home. Her grandfather, Benjamin Mattix, had entered the land from the government, and Mrs. Wickersham has the sheepskin deed to the land, signed by Zachary Taylor, then president of the United States. She taught school for two years, and gave organ lessons in the summer. The couple are members of the Baptist church at Sitka. For many years Mrs. Wickersham taught the adult Bible class in the Sunday School, having to give it up five years ago when she became ill. Mr. Wickersham served two terms as county councilman, being elected on the Democratic ticket. Mr. Wickersham has one sister, Mrs. Wilbur Timmons, of Idaville, and Mrs. Wickersham also has one sister, Mrs. C. A. Plotner, of Logansport. He served as a member of the White county council several years ago and was a member of the Sitka Baptist church. Mr. Wickersham was born Dec. 12, 1870, the son of LeRoy and Amanda (Bailey) Wickersham. He was united in marriage to Miss Ruann Mattix, the daughter of Jerry and Orphy Mattix of Pulaski county, March 2, 1894, and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1944. Surviving are the widow, who has been ill for some time; three sons, Gerald of Monticello, Clay, Mishawaka, Jerry, Brookston, two daughters, Ruth at home, and Orpha, a teacher in the Cheyenne, Wyoming schools; two grandchildren, Joan and Sandra Wickersham; and a sister, Mrs. Wilbur Timmons of Idaville. Three sons, George, Randolph and Robert preceded him in death. ...Burial was made in the Buffalo cemetery.
