Description	:	Chet William Hutchins, 86, of East Wenatchee, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1996, in Central Washington Hospital due to pneumonia complications following a brain aneurysm. Chet was born in Wibaux, Mont., April 14, 1910, to William Harmon and Mildred Pearl (Beeler) Hutchins. He was educated in Billings, Mont. Chet was born in Wibaux, Mont., April 14, 1910, to William Harmon and Mildred Pearl (Beeler) Hutchins. He was educated in Billings, Mont. At the age of 12, he began helping his father who was an auto mechanic. His family moved to Wenatchee in 1926. On Sept. 14, 1931, Chet married Velma Ruth Harper in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They made their first home in Centralia, where Chet worked at and later bought his first automobile business. Chet and his family moved back to Wenatchee in 1941 and he tried to enlist in the war, but was 4F, so he joined the civil service and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as the "senior equipment engineer" until 1944. Chet and his brother Cliff bought and sold Army surplus Jeeps in Wenatchee and later in 1946 began selling new Willys Jeeps, Packard and REO trucks at his new business, S.M. Service, on North Wenatchee Avenue. They were the first dealers in Wenatchee to get the franchise for the new Willys Jeeps. Chet was also the first person to drive a Jeep up the backside of Saddlerock. Chet was in the automobile business for 49 years. During those years he sold new and used cars, and after he sold the Jeep agency to Don Miller he dealt in Studebakers and Fiats. When he retired in 1971 he was the Lincoln Mercury dealer. All of this he accomplished with a 10th-grade education. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Lions Club, and a charter member of the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club. He did volunteer work for the Senior Citizen Center. He dearly loved his morning walks and to visit with his friends and neighbors, and many enjoyed the stories only he could tell. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Velma Ruth Hutchins, of the home; two sons, Bill of Las Vegas, Nev., and Chet Jr. of East Wenatchee; one daughter, Melanie Eakle of Wenatchee; two brothers, Howard of Centralia and Clifford of Oakland, Calif.; four sisters, Berneice Barrows of Sandy, Ore., Yvonne Morgan of Port Orchard, Sylvia Sandvig of Belfair and Shirley Hutchins of Everett; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Harmon of Centralia and Selmar of Roseburg, Ore. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee. CHET WILLIAM HUTCHINS - Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 5 at 10 o'clock in the morning at Telford's Chapel of the Valley with Pastor Don Hussong officiating. The services will conclude in the chapel. Private family inurnment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wenatchee Valley Senior Center. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley.
