One day as his wife's buggy approached the farm, the horses were traveling so fast that Esther thought they were running away with her so she jumped. This caused her to break her hip. Grisamore Obituary: Chester W. Grisamore, son of Jonathan and Sarah A. Grisamore was born August 9, 1844 in Jackson Co, Indiana, and died Feb. 24, 1919, at 10 p.m. aged 74 years, 6 months and 15 days. He enlisted in 1862 in Co. G 54th Reg. Indiana Volunteers under Capt. John Burrell and Major Mansfield, and returning from the army to Jackson Co., Indiana to Esther A. Thompson. The couple then moved to Wayne County, Iowa. To this union was born 14 children, 6 of whom are still living. Those living are: Frank, John, Pearl, of Corydon, Mrs. Hettie Reider of Yorktown, Oscar of Derby, and Maude at home. Also, one brother, Salathiel, of Clovis, New Mexico, remains to mourn him. The deceased lived in Wayne County 49 years, during this time he became quite a financial success through his active industry and keen business. He was remarkably hale and hearty until of late years when he gradually grew more feeble and at last became bedfast about 4 months before death. He realized from the first that his illness was fatal, but said he was ready to go. He was appreciative of every little act of kindness and was patient to the last. The funeral services were held from the Grismore home at one p.m. Wed., February 26, Rev. Duncan was in charge. He leaves to mourn their loss a wife, four sons, two daughters, one brother, twenty-eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, besides a host of friends. Wayne Co. According to Esther Caroline Grismore Brown, the Grisamore family in Wayne County changed the spelling of their name to Grismore during World War I as they felt that the merchants in the area were charging them higher prices due to their German name. They voted to delete the "a" in order to make their name less German. This accounts for the fact that some have one name and some have the other. The original family name when they emigrated from Alsace/Lorraine (German/French border) was Griesemer. When the family moved from Pennsylvania to southern Indiana in the early 1800s, their new neighbors of English background renamed them Grisamore.
