Description	:	Hans Christian Hansen (Chris Toxword) immigrated from Denmark and joined his brother, Niels, in the U.S. around 1872. He moved with his brother to settle in Burt county, NE. Here he helped on Nels' farm near Lyons, NE until marrying Mary E. Keettel on 5 Oct 1882 in Oakland, Burt county, NE. They farmed in Cleveland Township, Cuming county, NE. Here he helped on Nels' farm near Lyons, NE until marrying Mary E. Keettel on 5 Oct 1882 in Oakland, Burt county, NE. They farmed in Cleveland Township, Cuming county, NE. After Mary's death in 1913, Chris continued on the farm with his sons, Chester and Oren. He married Mrs. Alice (Heft) Moore in 1921. Chris & Mary had children: William S., Chester, Mrs. Gladys Magnuson, Oren Leroy and two daughters, Mary E. and Mary M., that died in infancy (buried next to them in Oakland Cemetery). William, Chester "Toxward" and Oren are all buried in Forest Lawn, Omaha, NE. According to family member & researcher, Richard Magnuson, the family's name was originally "Sorensen" and "Hansen"; this was changed to Toxword when they came to America because of their mail always getting mixed up with other Hansen's; they chose this name after the village they were from: Toxvaerd Denmark. Niels' parents were: Hans Sorensen (H.S. Toxword) and his mother was Marie Lisbeth Nielsdatter. Mr. Magnuson also shared the following obituary from the Pender Times: Last Sunday, death claimed Chris Hansen Toxword, of this community at a hospital at Omaha. For the past two years he has been in bad health and last Thursday suffered a stroke and was taken to Omaha, but the best medical aid was of no avail. As he passed away he was surrounded by all the members of his family. The funeral occurred last Wednesday from the Presbyterian church at Lyons and he was placed at rest in the family lot in the cemetery at that town, Rev. J.H. Salisbury officiating. Mr. Toxword came to America when he was 15 years of age, stopping for a time in Illinois. He then came to Nebraska and settled near Oakland. He also assisted in the building of the railroad from Omaha to Oakland. He herded cattle on the present site of the town of Lyons. In 1881 he purchased a quarter section of land 4 miles west of Lyons in Cuming county. October 5th, 1882 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Keettel. To this union were born 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls, two girls died in infancy. In 1899 he sold the home and moved to the present farm home 4 miles south of Pender in Cuming county. In March 1913 his wife passed away and on January 5th, 1921 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Alice H. Moore of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mr. Toxword is survived by his wife, one brother, N.H. Toxword, of Lyons, three sons, William S. in the railway mail service at Omaha, Chester H. and Cren L. at home, on daughter, Mrs. Axel M. Magnuson of Crofton, Nebr., also by eight grandchildren, Lola May, Ona Ethel, Dorothy Alice, Jean, and William Jr. of Omaha, Marion, Marvin and Dale Magnuson of Crofton, three step children, C.G. Moore of Waterloo, Iowa, Marvel Moore of Pender, Nebr. and Roland Moore of the U.S. Navy. The remains were accompanied from Omaha by Mrs. Toxword and the children and by her brother, Tom Heft, sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Kelly, and several other relatives of Mrs. Toxword's from Council Bluffs. A large number of friends from Pender and vicinity attended the services at Lyons, also several from Lyons and Oakland, as well as nieces and nephews and their families. The deceased was a native of Toxverd, Denmark, and was born July 18, 1853 [sic], and at the time of his death was 72 years, 11 months of age. Mr. Toxword was a pioneer farmer of Cuming county and was highly respected for his many good traits and sturdy character. The entire community join in sympathizing with his family.
