Description	:	Chris Hoodjer, age 95, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born November 9, 1919, in Jackson Township, Butler County, Iowa, to Gerhard Johann and Lena (Doescher) Hoodjer. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Chris received his education in various country schools south of Clarksville. Read More	Chris Hoodjer, age 95, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born November 9, 1919, in Jackson Township, Butler County, Iowa, to Gerhard Johann and Lena (Doescher) Hoodjer. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Chris received his education in various country schools south of Clarksville. Chris started working for local farmers at a young age, during the depression, helping his family make ends meet. Chris and his brother Claude moved to California and worked at Boeing Aircraft Factory. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, while in California. Chris served as a Motor Machinist Mate in the Navy during World War II. He had been stationed in Washington State, California and the Caribbean. Chris was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Clarksville and started Chris Hoodjer Construction. His brother, “Cub” was his right hand man and nephews, Milt and Bob also worked there, later taking over Hoodjer Excavating in 1982. On May 23, 1947, Chris was united in marriage with Maxine Avis Allan in the parsonage of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Although Chris and Maxine never had any children of their own, they kept very active. Maxine was a school teacher for many years and they were members of the St. John Lutheran Church. Chris was one of the original founders and Board Members of the Clarksville Nursing Home. He was very proud of this time. He was also a member of the Fire Department and a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post #30, enjoying the local Pioneer Day Activities and fish fry’s. After retirement and when he wasn’t spending time at work advising “Bob and Milt” he was most often with Maxine, wintering down south with their “Airstream” buddies and fishing in various states with family members. He also enjoyed woodworking and making various pieces such as arbors, trellises and stepping stools for family members. Chris spent most of his mornings in Pete & Shorty’s visiting with friends and with VFW friends in Clear Lake, Iowa and special friend Gladys, when he could. Chris died Friday, May 8, 2015 at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Clarksville, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; his parents; five brothers, Lester, Claude, George, Carl and Alvin in infancy; three sisters, Frieda Watts, Grace Scheidecker and Marie Brocka. Chris is survived by one sister-in-law, Bernice Hoodjer, many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Gladys Baker of Clear Lake, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church with burial at Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
