Description	:	Waverly lost one of its best known citizens last Saturday, July 24, when Christian Alois Malam, died at Passavant hospital, Jacksonville, following a short illness. Mr. Malam, son of William and Anna Romang Malam, was born in Chesterfield, Ill., January 31, 1895. He moved to Waverly in the fall of 1896, and from 1914 to 1922, resided in Maryville, Mo. Read More	Waverly lost one of its best known citizens last Saturday, July 24, when Christian Alois Malam, died at Passavant hospital, Jacksonville, following a short illness. Mr. Malam, son of William and Anna Romang Malam, was born in Chesterfield, Ill., January 31, 1895. He moved to Waverly in the fall of 1896, and from 1914 to 1922, resided in Maryville, Mo. He was married in 1917 in Maryville, Mo., to Mabel Cook, who survives. For about 30 years, Mr. Malam was associated with his uncle, George P. Romang, in the Malam garage. He was active in public affairs, having served as assistant chief of the city fire department for many years. He also served on the city council, and as a member of the District 1 school board. Mr. Malam took great interest in Masonic fraternal circles. He was a member of Waverly Lodge No. 118, A. F. & A. M.; Waverly Chapter No. 320, Order of the Eastern Star; Ansar Shrine, the Consistory, and Jeptha Chapter No. 75, of White Shrine, all of Springfield; and the Waverly Shrine Club. He was a member of the Waverly Congregational church. Besides his wife, he is suyrvived by his mother, Mrs. Anna Malam, of Waverly; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Bolen of Taylorville, and Mrs. Roberta Nation, of Memphis, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Poindexter of Waverly, Mrs. Louise Reese of St. Joseph, Mo., and Miss Lela Malam of Springfield; three brothers, Ben, of Los Angeles, Calif., John of Denver, Colo., and Chester, of St. Joseph, Mo.; four granddaughters, Karen Anita, Sharon Lynn and Dana Arden Bolen of Taylorville, and Cynthia Diann Nation, of Memphis, Tenn.; and an uncle, Mayor George P. Roman, of Waverly. He was preceded in death by his father, on February 26, 1950. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Rev. Francis E. Smith, of Versailles, officiating. The following poem dedicated to Mr. Malam was written by Mrs. N. A. Baldwin: Like A Tree He stood like a tree in the forest Upright, sturdy and tall, One you would long remember If you ever knew him at all. He stood for things with a purpose, His country, his home, his state, Ever with busy heart and hand To uplift, to build, to create. And like a tree in the forest That the storm has pushed aside, His place will be remembered, For the good that men do shall abide.
