Death removed another pioneer resident on Friday night when Christian Bender, a long time and honored citizen, passed through the portals to the beyond. Mr. Bender's death was not unexpected as he had been ailing for some time his illness being due chiefly to the failing of powers, be having attained more than the allotted span of four score years, and the coming of the Angel of Death and the taking away of his soul was as the passing to sleep of a child after a long and happy day filed with vicissitude, happiness, joy and sorrow intermingling. Mr. Bender was a jolly, whole-souled man of genial disposition and as a friend, neighbor and citizen was highly esteemed by all with whom he came in contact. His home life was ideal in its happiness and he was a devoted husband and father. Christian Bender was born on August 14, 1828, at Bechtelsheim, Germany, and came to America in 1856, locating at Illinois where he lived until he came to Plymouth county. He settled on a farm in Hungerford township where he lived for twenty-six years. In 1894 he moved to Le Mars, retiring from an active farm life to enjoy with his wife the rest they had earned after long years of hard toil and honest endeavor. He was a devout Christian and held verious offices of honor and trust in the United Evangelical church of which he was a member for fifty years. He leaves beside his faithful wife and helpmate with whom he lived over fifty years five children, who are Mrs. Geo. H. Bender, Mrs. Phil Winter, Hrs. Henry winter, of Hinton, Rev. J. C. Bender, of Clinton, Minn., and F. W. Bender, of Omaha, Neb. The funeral services were held on Monday morning in the United Evangelical church and the body was taken to the family burying ground in the Floyd Valley cemetery at Melbourne.
