Description	:	Chris Melby was born in Norway oh October 22, 1847 and Carrie (Larson - Rogne) was born in Norway on December 18, 1849. They were married in Valdres, Norway in the early 1870's. While still living in Norway they became the parents of three children: Chris was born in 1872, Sarah (Mrs. Gustav Engen) was born in 1874 and Lewis was born in 1880. Read More	Chris Melby was born in Norway oh October 22, 1847 and Carrie (Larson - Rogne) was born in Norway on December 18, 1849. They were married in Valdres, Norway in the early 1870's. While still living in Norway they became the parents of three children: Chris was born in 1872, Sarah (Mrs. Gustav Engen) was born in 1874 and Lewis was born in 1880. Chris and Carrie and their three children immigrated to the United States in 1881 from Valdres, Norway. After sailing across the ocean they arrived by train in Dunlap, Iowa. Carrie and the three children stayed in the Dunlap Hotel for 3 days while Chris went out to find land to settle on. They purchased a wagon and a team of horses and supplies and started out to the north and west and staked their claim about 5 miles east of Moorhead, Iowa where the family moved into a dugout which was their first home in America. This land is now owned by a grandson, Earl Melby, and farmed by a great grandson, Maynard Melby. Chris and Carrie's fourth child Adolph was born in the dug-out in 1882. Chris was a good carpenter so as soon as possible he built a small building to live in, and later added other barm buildings. It was on this farm that their other children were born: Oscar born in 1885, twin daughters, Nettie (Mrs. Oscar Wingate) and Anna (Mrs. Martin Evenson) born in 1888 and John born in 1891. Chris and Carrie retired to a home they built in Soldier in 1909. This is the house now owned by Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Stevens. In this house Chris made a special compartment in the pantry to keep his lefse and flat bread. They were members of the Soldier Lutheran Church - first being active in the South Church where their children were all confirmed in the Norwegian language. They probably helped in the rebuilding of the two churches that were destroyed. Chris passed away on June 30, 1920 and Carrie passed away on January 7, 1928. They are both buried in the Soldier Lutheran Church Cemetery.
