Christian died apparently as a bachelor on 18th April 1899 in Wapello county, Iowa. From a newspaper article on the death of Christian ECKROATE: Chris Eckroat, well known to every fisherman and every man woman or child in this city who has ever enjoyed a boat ride on the river above the city, met a tragic death Tuesday evening about 5 o'clock, by being carried over the dam, in a boat and deposited in the hurling tempestuous waters below the falls, where both boat and body was discovered shortly after the boat disappeared. Until a postmortem examination is held, if it is held at all, which is unlikely, the exact cause of the death will probably be unknown, but from all the evidence now at hand, it is probable that the old riverman was dead before he struck the falls, and that paralysis was the cause, as the victim of death's tragic hand had been troubled for years with that disease, and on the day he met his death has complained of a tired feeling and pains in and about his back. He was advised at home that he had been probably working too hard and that he had better not go out on the river alone, but apparently he heeded it not, and as a result, though death would have perhaps come anyway, his body was found beneath the waves. Deceased has been for eight years past the keeper of the boat house on the banks of the river just west of the city, and had always been accommodating, as well as careful of the property entrusted to his care. While engaged in his work, along with A. Snodgrass, a fellow workman and Elijah Stringham, in the workshop just west of the club house, painting a boat and otherwise preparing it for service, Mr. Eckroat said he was going to get the paint, in a shed near by, which he was mixing. He did not return and after waiting for a sometime, Mr. Snodgrass remarked that it was taking Chris a long time to get that paint ready, so he walked out and discovered the door shut. The paint was found on the stove, untouched. His ear then caught the sound of a dog barking, and recognizing the sound of the canine voice as that of Eckroat's little terrier, he started down along the bank towards the dam, and there met several men who informed him that a boat containing a body had gone over the dam about fifteen minutes before. Witnesses at the Dam: Drs. Atteberry and Baker, while out enjoying an afternoon's stroll, chanced to walkup along from the Milwaukee Junction towards the dam, and had arrived at a point about 200 feet from the falls when upon looking down the river, discovered a boat floating upon the surface, containing the prostrate form of a man, and the oars lying upon the water as though they had dropped from the oarsman's hands while rowing. The two doctors and others who happened to see the spectacle, called out to the body, in an effort to awaken the man, but to no avail. The boat was about 30 feet from the shore, and all efforts to secure it were of no avail. No boats were available at the spot, and if they were they could not have been used, as the rapids had been reached, and the boat was flying to the falls. John Boatman, a fisherman, saw the boat go over, and struck out in his own craft below the dam, secured the boat and oars about 300 feet below. The search at once instituted for the body located it about 100 feet below the abutment, near the shore, where it had lodged. The corpse was at once removed and conveyed to the undertaking rooms of Coroner John O'Donnell, where they will remain until sometime today, when they will be removed to his late home 1023 West Second street. Chris Eckroat was born in Ohio October 24th, 1842, where he grew to manhood, then entered the service and served in the war of the Rebellion under General Logan. He removed to Iowa eight years ago, and has made his home in this city ever since. He was never married. He leaves to mourn his loss a mother and sister with whom he lived at 1023 West Second street, and of whom he was the only support. Another sister, Mrs. Mosier, residing on Wapello street, and a brother seven miles from Oskaloosa, also mourn the sudden loss of a kind brother.
