Description	:	Christian Schwinkendorf Family New Salem 1883-1983, page 450 Mr. and Mrs. Christian Schwinkendorf (Caroline Voelker) were born in Mecklenburg- Shwerin, Germany in 1837 and 1841 respectively. In the spring of 1891 they came to New Salem and lived on the Von Schollern place which is now the Myron Norton farm. They later took up a Homestead, where the George Bopp Jr. farm is now. All of their nine children were born in Germany. They are Mrs. Henry Voitel (Wilhemina) (1864 - 1948); Mrs. J. Jiras (Fredricka) (1870 - 1945); Mrs. F. Katzke (Christina) (1871 - 1952); Mrs. Fred Bopp, Sr. (Anna) (1878 - 1960); John (1875 - 1958); William (1880 - 1962); Carl (1873 - 1902); Fritz (1867 - 1915); and a small daughter who died of diphtheria. Christian died in 1931 and Caroline in 1899. In 1895 Fritz Schwinkendorf homesteaded 7 miles South of New Salem. In 1897 he married Frieda Jahnke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Janke. She was born in 1880 in Warren, Germany and with her family came to the New Salem area in 1892. The young bride started life in a sod house and was afraid of Indians, even though she hadn't seen one. They rush to build a new stone and concrete home before their second child was born in 1902. Frieda died in 1970. The couple had six children: Albert (1900 - 1968); Erna (Mrs. Charles Kaelberer), New Salem; Fritz (Agnes Albrecht), New Salem; Frieda (Mrs. Edw. J. Albrecht), New Salem; Harry (Margaret Kunkel), Yakima, Washington and Carl ( Bernice Kuller), Entiat, Washington. Albert was born on the Homestead as a young man he worked in the New Salem elevator, in the round house in Dilworth, Minnesota and served in the Army in 1920. In 1925 he married Elsie Werchau, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Werchau. They farmed the family farm until the spring of 1959 when they retired, sold the Homestead farm to Gordon Bopp and moved to New Salem. Albert was County assessor for Morton County for over 30 years, served on the Columbia School district board and the Bethel Church Board. There are seven children all at present living in Morton County. Doris (Mrs. Henry Ritz), New Salem; Lorraine (Mrs. Roy Johnson), Mandan; Howard (married to Lois Miller), Mandan; Alta (Mrs. William Bethke), Almont; Donald (married to Lorraine Kouch), New Salem; Laverne (Mrs. DuWayne Lottes), New Salem and Glenn (married to Constance Ostafin), Mandan. There are 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
