Obituary- "Creighton Courier", Creighton, Nebr., Thurs., Sept. 22, 1898, page 1, col 3- SOLDIER BOY PASSES AWAY "Christopher Kyriss, age twenty-two years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Kyriss, who lives about eight miles east of Creighton, died of typhoid maleria at Norfolk Sanitarium, Monday morning. Christ enlisted as a private in Company L Second Nebraska volunteers about July 1st at Norfolk and reported for duty at Chickamauga, July 5th. He was taken sick with throat trouble and after he was granted a sick furlough he was not considered dangerous until he reached Norfolk. Capt. Beals and six comrades accompanied the remains to Creighton and acted as pallbearers at the funeral. A number of Grand Army men and citizens were at the depot and escorted the remains to the G. A. R. hall where they lay in state till Wednesday at one o'clock when the funeral services were held. The citizens out of respect for the dead soldier suspended business during the hour of service and the schools attended in a body. Rev. Buddenhagen of the Lutheran church delivered a sermon in German and Rev. Ingersoll delivered a short sermon followed by prayer by Rev. Markley. When the funeral procession came through main street there were at 100 American flags floating in the breeze. The respect due all soldiers was shown the deceased, the only soldier that has died to break the ranks of Co. L. of Norfolk." He was born in Nordheim, Wurttemberg, Germany. German records show he was born April 11,1876, christened April 23, 1876.
