Another of Barton county's early settlers has gone to this great reward. The death of Christian Geils, who came to Barton county in the early 70's and who had resided since on the farm he homesteaded, died yesterday afternoon at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 29 days. His death was due to blood poisoning, the result of a scratch on the leg he received about two weeks ago and which about a week ago commenced to pain him and distribute a poison through the system which could not be checked. He was born in Matfeld, Hanover, Germany January 6, 1841, and came to this country in June, 1857, when 16 years of age. The family located in Illinois and he grew to manhood there and in February, 1869, was united in marriage to Miss Dora Bunge. They moved to Iowa that year where they remained until 1878, when they located in Barton county on the farm which they have made their home for nearly 43 years. He leaves his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Louis Kruckenberg, and ten grandchildren, and a host of friends to mourn his death. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kruckenberg have made their home with the Geils and have conducted the farm for many years. Mr. Geils was of a very active disposition and insisted on choring around and having something to do and it was while engaged in some of this work that he received the scratch which resulted later in his death. He was a man who was liked by everyone, a kind father and husband and a good citizen. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Lutheran church in Clarence township and the body interred in the cemetery nearby.
