Read More	The Plainview News, Thursday Evening, November 11, 1915, Obituary Christian Hecht is Laid to Rest The people of Plainview were greatly shocked Saturday morning when they learned that Grandpa Hecht had suffered a stroke of paralysis that morning, and the shock was even greater when they learned that he passed away Saturday evening. He was stricken early in the morning, just as he was dressing for the day, and was sitting on the floor when found by members of the family. Mr. Hecht was one of the old settlers in this part of the country and was a man of excellent character and highly respected by all who knew him. There is no language at our command by which we can fittingly portray the sincerity of this man's character; and in the experience of a lifetime, the writer hereof can safely say he never met one who seemed to more nearly walk hand in hand with God. Conscience guided every act. He was a model of mental industry in his efforts to entertain and instruct his people. He was strictly honest in the service he rendered. In short he was not only a model Christian, but he was an honorable gentleman in the highest sense that term implies. He commanded the respect of all sects and classes of people, as the attendance at his funeral fully verified. We did not fully appreciate his true worth until after the thread of life was severed. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon and the burial made in the old cemetery. Christian Hecht was born August 26, 1830, in the village of Cleve, Province of Schlewig-Holstein, Germany, and died at Plainview, November 7, 1915, aged eighty-five years, two months and eleven days. He was apprenticed to a cabinet maker and after having served four years in his apprenticeship, was drafted into the military service of Schlewig-Holstein in 1850 during it's struggles for independence against Denmark. Immigrated to America with his future father-in-law in 1852, settling in Joliet, Illinois, where he was married to Margretta E. Deerson, May 23, 1853. To this union were born eight children. Three died in infancy. John F., George H., Alice Hecht Herbert, Herman J., and Charles C. founded families of their own. In 1866 Mr Hecht moved with his family to a farm in Kankakee County, Illinois, and in 1881 to Grant Park, where he conducted a hardware store with was destroyed by fire in June, 1884 . Very soon after he took up a homestead and tree claim six miles northeast of Plainview where the wife and mother passed away January 14, 1894. In 1903 he retired to Plainview where he spent the remainder of his life mostly with his son, George. He was a charter member as well as the oldest member of the Masonic Lodge No. 204 A.F. & A.M. of Plainview, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran faith and since living in Plainview has attended the Congregational Church. Grandpa Hecht is survived by two sons, George H., of Plainview, and Charles C., of Humboldt, Nebraska, fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
