September 13, 1946 Funeral services were held at the Sutley Congregational church, north of Java, last Friday afternoon for Christian Rau Sr., 92, well known and highly respected pioneer resident of the Sutley community in southeastern Campbell County. Mr. Rau passed away on Monday September 02, at the home of his son, Christ W Rau, north of Java. He ahd been critically ill for a week. Services were conducted by Reverend J Nein of the Selby Congregational church, assisted by Kenneth Biel, of the Sutley community, a Yankton College Theology student, and by Reverend R H Miller of the Bowdle Evangelical church. Special music was by a men's quartet. Interment was made in the Evangelical cemetery near the Gust Rau farm, in the Sutley community. Christian Rau was born January 19, 1854, in Bergdorf, South Russia, where he was baptized and confirmed and where he grew to young manhood. In 1879, he was united in marriage with Christina Weller. Eleven children were born to this union of whom eight preceded their father in death. In 1890, he came with his family to America, settling on a homstead near Sutley in Campbell County, where he spent the remainder of his life. During the many years of his life here he endured hardships and sorrows as well as the blessings of honest toil and a good Christian life and won the respect and regard of neighbors and fellowmen. In 1898, his wife passed away. Several years later he was married to Magdalene Mittleider, who died in 1927. Some years later he married Margaret Mittleider, who also preceded him in death, passing away in 1941. He had been in fair health until about three weeks ago when he became ill and was confined to bed. About a week before his death, his condition became critical and he gradually became weaker until at 11 p.m. September 02, when he passed away. He had reached the age of 92 years, eight months and 17 days. He is survived by three sons, John of McLaughlin, Christ W and Gust A, of north of Java; 35 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
