Description	:	Christian Shafer, son of Adam and Kathryn (Nading) Shafer, was born in Germanville, Livingston County, Illinois. On October 1, 1896, he married Emma Roth in Illinois. They farmed in Cullom, Illinois from 1896-1912. In 1912 they migrated to Grant Township, Boone County, Iowa, where they retired in 1939. At that time they moved to Boxholm. Christian and Emma have six children: Mrs. Charles Leon (Minnie) Ott, Roy L. Ott, Ray A. Ott, Mrs. Jessie (Lillian) Ott, Mrs. Clifford (Emma) Smith and Mrs. Oral (Edna) Powers. Following Mrs. Shafer's death in 1942, Christian remarried to Mrs. Kate Caro in 1945. ______________________________________________ January 23, 1947 FUNERAL SERVICE FOR CHRIS SHAFER AT BOXHOLM Funeral services for Christian Shafer, were conducted on Monday, Dec. 30, at the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church at Boxholm, at 2 o'clock in charge of the pastor, the Rev. H. C. Bunemeier and interment was in the Renner Cemetery southwest of Boxholm in charge of Carlson and Son. Mrs. Will Bakley was the pianist for the services. Merle Tonkinson sang "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" and "I Don't Have to Cross Jordan Alone", accompanied by Mrs. Tonkinson. The pall bearers were Orace Wiener, Jerome Lehman, Jim Stockman and L. B. Wayne. The flowers were cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bakley, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Peterson and Mrs. Orace Wiener. Christian Shafer was born Oct. 22, 1870 in Livingston County, Illinois and departed from this left Dec. 26, 1946 at Fort Doge, Iowa aged 76 years, 2 months and 4 days. He moved to Iowa in 1912 settling on the farm which he bought 5 1/2 miles southwest of Boxholm where he continued to live until he retired eight years ago after which he moved into Boxholm. Preceding his coming to Iowa, Mr. Shafer had farmed in Illinois for a number of years. Here in connection with his farming he also did custom threshing and shelling. On Oct. 1, 1898 he was united in marriage to Emma Roth and with her he had shared the various experiences of married life for 44 years when she preceded him in death September 13, 1942. Two sons and four daughters were born to this union. On Feb 5 1945 Mr. Shafer was united in marriage with Mrs. Kate Caro who survives him. In his passing Mr. Shafer is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kate Shafer, two sons, Ray and Roy of this community; by four daughters, Mrs. Leon Ott, Mrs. Jesse Ott and Mrs. Oral Powers all of this community and Mrs. Clifford Smith of Paton; by 23 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one brother Ed Shafer of Chatsworth Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Philip Koerner also of Chatsworth Ill.; and Mrs. Lewis Fatka of Jefferson, Iowa; besides a larger number of other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Shafer has united with the Evangelical Church of Germantown, Ill. as a youth and then in the years that followed he transferred to the church of his choice successively to Chatsworth, Ill., later to the Renner Evangelical Church and more recently to the church at Boxholm. During his active church life he had served as class leader and trustee for several terms and from time to time he also served as Sunday School teacher. On several occasions he also served as the lay delegate to the session of the Iowa Conference. His race is run and his task is done. Now may he rest in peace, and even tho he is dead may his life continue to bear fruit in the lives of those whom he influenced for good.
