She was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on June 13, 1843, and came to America with her parents when she was 11 years old. The family lived in Milwaukee and later in Platteville, Wis., and it was at Platteville that deceased was married to Jacob Wernli. Mr. and Mrs. Wernli came to Le Mars in 1875. Deceased was a member of the Methodist church. * Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, IA, Tuesday, February 17, 1925, pg. 1, col. 5 RESIDES HERE HALF CENTURY Widow of Noted Educator Dies from Infirmities of Old Age LEAVES A LARGE FAMILY Mrs. Christina Wernli Widely Known in the Community Mrs. Christina Wernli, a pioneer resident of Le Mars, died at the home of her son-in-law, C. F. Paul, 420 First Avenue SE, following an illness of some duration. Death was due to infirmities of age. Mrs. Wernli came to Plymouth county in 1875, with her husband, the late Prof. Jacob Wernli, and has resided here since. Mr. Wernli was a noted educator in his life time, and was superintendent of the city schools, and later county superintendent. He was the founder of the Le Mars Normal School, from which was evolved Western Union college. Mrs. Christine Wernli was born in Darmsfadt, Germany, June 13, 1843, and came to America with her parents when she was eleven years old. She lived in Milwaukee and Platteville, and at the latter place was united in marriage with Jacob Wernli. Came Here in 1875 They came to Le Mars in 1875 and bought a farm in Washington township. They lived but a short time on the farm, coming to Le Mars, which has been the family home since. Mrs. Wernli is survived by a large family of step-children and children, who are William Wernli, of Riverton, Wyo.; G. L. Wernli, C. A. Wernli and Mrs. C. E. Haas, of Le Mars; Geo. D. Wernli, of Los Angeles, Ca.; Mrs. E. C. Lucke, of Le Mars; H. A. Wernli, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Frank P. Wernli, of Hazen, N. D.; Louis S. Wernli, of Sioux City; Otto R. Wernli and Mrs. C. F. Paul, of Le Mars; Mrs. L. B. Schaefer and Mrs. A. L. Livingston, of Paulina, Iowa. Mrs. Wernli was a life long member of the Methodist church and interested in the work of the church and its kindred societies. She devoted herself to her husband and children and was a homemaker in the highest sense of the word, and was respected by all who knew her. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at St. Paul's church. Rev. F. H. Thiel, of Charles City, and Rev. W. F. Belling, pastor of the church, officiating.
