Read More	MERCURIO, CHRISTIE A., JR., 88, of Phillips Street, Wickford, RI, died Friday, September 1, 2006, at West View Nursing Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Doris (Rice) Mercurio and the late Colleen (Guhl) Mercurio. Born in Providence, a son of the late Christie A. Mercurio, Sr. and Laura (Bartolomeo) Mercurio; he had lived in North Kingstown since 1955. A professional auctioneer and estate and antique appraiser for over fifty years, Mr. Mercurio owned and operated Christie Mercurio & Co. He previously served as a Time Keeper at the Quonset Naval Air Base. A United States Army/Air Force Veteran, he served in WWII. Mr. Mercurio started the first Flea Market in the Eastern United States at Rocky Hill in East Greenwich in 1956 and operated as its manager until 1982. He was the owner of the Museum 'Things Grama Threw Away' in Wickford and the Old Theatre Store. Respected for his extensive charity and community involvement, Mr. Mercurio conducted a variety of fund raising auctions for the Heart Association, various schools, The Cancer Fund, Animal Rescue League, churches, Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick, The United Way, and various other charities. He also helped organize the first Bishop Hendricken High School Epoch Auction, which he continued for 7 years, all of which were very successful. He was a charter member of the Auctioneers Association of Rhode Island and a member of the National Auctioneers Assn.; a 32nd Degree Master Mason, Harmony Lodge 9 in Cranston; a Lt. Colonel in the Varnum Continentals; a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence; a member of the R.I. Palestine Shrine; the East Greenwich Rotary Club; and The Boy Scouts of America Providence Troop #1 Washington Park. Known for his gregarious personality, his firm and beautiful singing voice, and his quick auctioning style, Mr. Mercurio encouraged and aided many apprentice auctioneers throughout the years. He had a special sense of humor and appreciation and respect for objects once highly valued but now past their prime, as evidenced in his philosophy, 'You don't dare let go of anything, if you do they'll be some day you'll wish you still had something you threw away.' He will be forever missed. He was the devoted father of Donna G. Cerrone of North Kingstown, loving brother of Beatrice Grilli of Johnston and the late Harold, Joseph and Esther Mercurio. Cherished grandfather of Andrew C. Cerrone and Michelle C. Cerrone-Wahl and her husband Dr. Eric M. Wahl. A Requiem Eucharist was celebrated Tuesday at 11:00 am in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 3257 Post Road, Warwick, RI. Published in The Providence Journal on 9/3/2006.
