Christina Bauer was born in Germany, Jan 28, 1838, being one of several children born to Martin and Christina (Rose) Elbert, who came to the United states when she was a young girl. Christina Bauer was born in Germany, Jan 28, 1838, being one of several children born to Martin and Christina (Rose) Elbert, who came to the United states when she was a young girl. Her mother was burned fatally in New York state when Christina was a young girl. She was one of five children, all deceased. Mrs. Bauer was united in marriage to George Bauer at Greensburg, Indiana, in 1867, and three years later she and her husband came to Tetersburg, where they resided until 1885, when they removed to Goldsmith, where the husband's death occurred December 11, 1904. Two children were born to George and Christina, Phillip, who resides in Goldsmith, and Emma, who married Frank U. Campbell. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Mrs. Albert Michel, residing near Hopewell. (Tribune dated July 6,1933) Mrs. Christina Bauer, widow of George Bauer, whose death Thursday is mourned by this community, had lived an eventful life and died as she had lived it, the end coming peacefully, While surrounded by loving relatives and friends. Grandma Bauer as she was better known to all, was left an orphan when a girl of eight years, four years after her parents came to America from Germany. She was born at Floenheim. Her mother dying four years after the family arrived in America. Christina soon was placed in the home of a family at Beechwood, Sullivan county, New York and later she was employed in a home in New York City. Deprived of her mother and being compelled to assist herself, her early education was limited but by being ambitious, she studied when she could and this she continued throughout life. At the age of 19, Mrs. Bauer went to Cincinnati where she was employed for a time and then went to Greensburg. There she met George Bauer, a stalwart young blacksmith and they were married, the ceremony taking place on the 15th day of December 1857. George was also a native of Germany and had learned his trade in that country. He was an expert workman and it was on his anvil in Greensburg, that the tools were fashioned, sharpened and repaired which were used in building the old Courthouse of Decatur county. In 1860, the young blacksmith and his bride came to Tipton county and the husband opened a blacksmith shop in Tetersburg, being known throughout the county as a workman excelled. old residents of the Tetersburg and Goldsmith communities have some of his work on their farms today. The first great sorrow of this couple was in 1899, when their son, John E. Bauer, was killed in a runaway incident well remember by older residents of the community. (Tribune July 7, 1933)
