Christena Carrie Nelson, the daughter of Nels Peter and Nena Esbeck Clemsen, was born 8 Nov 1912 on her parents farm west of Exira in Oakfield Township, Audubon Co. and died 10 Dec 2001 at the Exira Care Center in Exira. Christena was baptized and confirmed at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. She attended school in the Elk Horn area and worked as a hired girl for several families in Atlantic. On 18 June 1931 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Peter Nelson at the Elk Horn Lutheran Parsonage. They operated their farm in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, where they raised their 6 children. Lawrence and Christena celebrated their golden wedding in 1981 and reached their 70th wedding anniversary in June 2001. She was a member of the Brayton Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA and was a charter member of the Brayton Sunshine Club. Preceding her in death were her parents, her brothers Arthur Clemson and Henry Clemsen; her sisters: Anna Hansen, Mable Knudsen, Beulah Turner Davis and Sylvia Romer Foster. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Nelson of Brayton; her children, Betty Patterson and her husband Delmar of Atlantic; Dale Nelson and his wife Linda of Exira; Glen Nelson and his wife Janet of rural Brayton; Kenneth Nelson of Arvada, CO; Janice Kinnison of Atlantic and Roger Nelson and his wife, Marilyn of Ogalala, NE, 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, her sister Ethel Hoegh, and her brother Lester Clemsen and his wife Demi, all of Atlantic, and her brother-in-law Burton Foster of Davenport, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
