Description	:	Christine was the daughter of Ubbe and Jennie (Janssen) Toomsen of Geneva, Iowa. She was born in 1932, the tenth of thirteen children. The Toomsen family farm is currently listed as an Iowa Century Farm. Christine was educated in Geneva's Sunnyside Country School up thru the eighth grade. She later earned her GED diploma while raising four children as a single mother and working full time at Hampton’s Maytag plant in the wire harness department. She retired from Maytag in 1985. Read More	Christine was the daughter of Ubbe and Jennie (Janssen) Toomsen of Geneva, Iowa. She was born in 1932, the tenth of thirteen children. The Toomsen family farm is currently listed as an Iowa Century Farm. Christine was educated in Geneva's Sunnyside Country School up thru the eighth grade. She later earned her GED diploma while raising four children as a single mother and working full time at Hampton’s Maytag plant in the wire harness department. She retired from Maytag in 1985. Christine lived in the Iowa communities of Ackley, Hampton, Latimer, Bradford, and Panora. For the past twenty years, she made her winter home in McAllen and later at the Plantations Park in Pharr, Texas. Christine married Robert Harris in 1951 in Ackley, Iowa. The couple had four children and lived in Hampton, Iowa. Besides working at Maytag, she also managed a side business in Hampton called Harris Trailer & Camper Sales and Rentals until the early 1970s. Later on, she would meet Victor Schurman at a music festival in McAllen, Texas where they both wintered. The couple married in Maui, Hawaii in 1992 and lived in Victor’s Franklin, Nebraska home before settling in Hastings, Nebraska. Christine traveled extensively around America. She especially loved Nashville. Her international travels included Europe, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico, and islands in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. She took cruises within Alaska, the Panama Canal, the Bahamas, and Hawaii. Country music was Christine's true passion. She was self taught on the guitar, accordion, piano and harpsichord and performed in various Iowa country music bands including Riches Ramblers. She was a frequent recipient of piano, accordion, singing and yodeling awards and is an inductee of the Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame in both Iowa and Nebraska. She recorded two country music CDs that included her piano melodies and yodeling. Yodeling is a singing style characterized by repeated rapid changes of pitch between the low-pitch and high-pitch register. When she wintered in Texas, she would perform in various music jamborees. In her later years, she would continue her passion by performing music sing alongs for nursing home residents in Panora, Guthrie Center, Perry and Dallas Center. The song, Chime Bells, was one of her signature yodeling songs and her most requested song. Christine was a former member of Hampton’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was a member of Panora’s Faith Bible Church and Panora's Sunshine Club. She was a former member of Hampton’s BPW club and honored with their local ‘Woman Of The Year’ award. She attended most of the Toomsen Family Reunions held annually in Ackley, Iowa and traveled with Toomsen relatives to Germany where they visited places of their heritage and met with distant relatives. Christine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor; brothers: Clarence Toomsen of Hampton, John Toomsen of Geneva, Delbert Toomsen and Norman Toomsen both of Iowa Falls. Sisters: Grace Roske of Iowa Falls, Elizabeth Spieker, Johanna Daniels and Henrietta Miller of Ackley, IA and Florence Schultz of Hampton. Christine will be deeply missed by her four children; Patti Harris of Guthrie Center, IA; Rhonda & Don Versluys of Pella, IA; Jeff & Lyn Harris of Taipei, Taiwan and Janae & Dennis Wise of Phoenix, AZ; sisters Berdine & Ray See of Independence, IA; and Marian & Merlyn Witte of Cedar Falls, IA; grandchildren; Chad Wise; Jenny & Kris Kunze; Lauren and Brandon Wait; Andy Versluys; Kirby Harris; Kiley Versluys; Michael Wise; and Jessi Campbell of Des Moines, IA. Great-Grandchildren; Kaiden, Isaac, Calder and Corbin. As well as many cousins, nieces and nephews of the Toomsen, Janssen and Harris sides of the family. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 1, 2018 at St. Peters UCC Church near Geneva, Iowa. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ackley, Iowa
