And that the funeral services should be largely attended was a worthy tribute of respect to a man who was in all points a true friend and neighbor, honorable and upright in his dealings and above the breath of reproach. The procession started from his home, 8 miles northwest of town, and arrived in Randolph about 1:30 p.m. and halted at the German Lutheran church on the East side, where members of the Sons of Herman and the Odd Fellows in full regalia were in waiting, Mr. Wagner being a member of these orders. Rev. F. Hefner of Coleridge conducted services in German and preached an eloquent sermon. Leaving the church the societies formed ahead of the hearse, the Banker's Union of Magnet in the lead the Odd Fellows following and the Sons of Herman, of which deceased was president, occupying the place of honor just ahead of the funeral car. At the cemetery this order was reversed. Rev. Hefner administered the last rites of his office as minister, after which the Sons of Herman took charge of the service which was conducted by Grand President Vlopp of Wayne, and was read in German. The Odd Fellows conducted the closing ritualistic services, under charge of Dr. Cook as Noble Grand and H. L. Peck as chaplain. The funeral cortege was one of the largest ever seen in Randolph about 75 teams and 65 uniformed men being in the line. On the casket were the regalia of the orders of which he was a member and a number of beautiful floral tributes. The grave was lined with white cloth and the casket was covered with the sprigs of evergreen cast in by his lodge brothers to signify that his memory would ever be fresh in their minds. The Odd Fellows sung the following funeral ode: Chris Wagner was born in Westhausen, province of Sachsen, Prussia, November 3, 1845; died at his home northwest of Randolph, august 30, 1901, aged 55 years, 9 months and 27 days. He was married to his wife, Katherine Wagner, in Prussia and together they came to America in 1873. The young couple settled on a farm in Cass county, Iowa, near Atlantic, and lived there 18 years. In 1891 the family moved to Nebraska and bought the farm they have since occupied, gradually improving it until today it is among the best in the country. His faithful wife and four children - Mrs. Minnie Turner of Osmond; William, John and Miss Emma, survive him. He also leaves one brother, John Wagner of Peoria, Ill., and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Seaman of Atlantic, Iowa.
