Christian Yanke, a pioneer of the Odessa area, died at his home here at noon Wednesday of cancer, a disease he contracted about a year ago and which had kept him bedfast for over a month. He was 70 years old. Mr. Janke was a native of south Russia. He grew to manhood there and in early life married Miss Elizabeth Janke. "Christian Yanke Passes Away. Christian Yanke, a pioneer of the Odessa area, died at his home here at noon Wednesday of cancer, a disease he contracted about a year ago and which had kept him bedfast for over a month. He was 70 years old. Mr. Janke was a native of south Russia. He grew to manhood there and in early life married Miss Elizabeth Janke. Eighteen children were the fruit of this union, but all but three of them preceded their father in death. Forty-six years ago, the family emigrated to the United States and settled in South Dakota, where they resided 10 years, which were followed by 10 years more in North Dakota before coming to Washington in 1907, where railroad land was purchased a short distance north of Odessa and a good home made. Mr. and Mrs. Janke resided on this farm until 1906 when they retired and moved to Odessa. Mr. Yanke was a well-known character about town, where his sunny disposition and genial smile won him a large circle of friends. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow, Elizabeth, and three daughters, Mrs. L.C. Delzer, Mrs. John Haase and Mrs. Henry Beck, all residents of Odessa. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday from the Pilgrim Congregational church of which he was a member, with the Rev. K.K. Maier officiating, after which his remains will be laid to rest in the Odessa Cemetery." "Yanke, Christ.
